Maybe you are thinking, "I don't like dogs ... why do I want to read every book about one?" Let me confide in you: this is exactly what I was thinking when I chose Marley & Me on the shelf. I've never had a dog, and I don't particularly like my neighbor's dog. I have no plans to have a pet dog ... this book has worked to strengthen my resolve never to have a "man's best friend".
However, whether you are a "dog person" or not, there is still much to be gained and enjoy while reading this book. The memories are personal and heartwarming, sometimes completely forgetting that Marley has something to do with the book. But then he comes back to the next level, bringing in funny jokes all the time.
The book begins with a young couple, John and Jenny, who recently got married in Palm Beach, looking for a new challenge in life. They were deeply in love, had a large house, good jobs, and no worldly care. That takes about 2 pages… that until they bring Marley home. Little did they know that their lives would never be the same again.
Like a 79-pound Labrador retriever with the more powerful Alaskan oil rig, Marley’s entry into John and Jenny’s life is a storm of catastrophe. Crash on screen doors, carpet demolition, drywall, eating jewelry are all puppies' day. All in all, however, this book shows the unconditional love Marley has for her family, and they have no love for her. Just as his power of destruction seems to be infinite, his love and loyalty are boundless.
In this book, John Groan takes us to some of Marley's most crazy adventures. The story of Marley's expulsion from a listening school is heartwarming, especially thanks to the dog-sniffed dog trainer who finally found his pride in Marley in a silver dog bowl. If Marley is included in the local film production as a “normal family dog”, we all worry about what harm this dog can do. Indeed, after a full day of recording the second 15 episodes, the only thing Marley accomplished was tearing down the set and chewing on his string.
One of the most memorable stories was about the Groan family coming out of town to have a family dinner. With Marley on her toes, they decided that the Florida climate allowed for food outside in the yard of a delicious restaurant. Marley is protected from a metal dining table, and drinks are served. However, when Marley sees another dog stepping onto the street, she runs after it, dragging the metal table, and clears the guard a few feet across. Needless to say, the family did not exclude Marley from many family meals there after that.
A big part of Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog actually has very little to do with the big animal. The book reads like a well-written journal, describing the joys of a young couple over their first pregnancy, as well as grief over the subsequent miscarriage. John overcame deep-seated family pressures, while Jenny faced severe depression. Although the book is primarily a comedy, one-minute laughter, it certainly does not have its cool moments. However, these honest and purposeful pages give Marley & Me the only thing you need to stand out from the crowd.
All in all, Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog is an excellent book that can be enjoyed by all types of people (even cat lovers). The stories are funny and logical, the drama is heartwarming and honest, and the dog is a complete mess. Finally, Marley reminds all of us that life is to be lived in perfect balance, that we must love people unconditionally, and that composite upholstery is a small price to pay for a long-term friend.
