Hollywood is constantly being forced to evolve with an ever-changing modern world, which can sometimes deem certain trends or actions as “cancelled.” The plot is often disrespectful and does not accurately portray the person or group. A lot of the films have maintained their status as “classics” even though they are laden with these issues. However, it is sure that they would not be acceptable as a film produced today. Read on to find out which ones have made the list.
White Chicks (2004)
The plot of White Chicks is that two Black FBI agents who are brothers fail to successfully break up a drug bust. Their punishment is to follow around some rich, blonde twin sisters in the Hamptons to lure a kidnapper out of hiding. The girls abandon the brothers so the agents are forced to disguise themselves as white, blonde women. As the film is full of intercourse, racism and other offensive jokes, there is no way it will ever be remade again.
La piscine (1969)
An erotic thriller, this Italian-French film was a hit with audiences in France. The police were present during the shooting of the film, for the safety of Alain Delon and his wife after the murder of Stevan Markovic, a Yugoslavian political refugee who worked for Alain Delon and his wife.
Kiss of Death (1995)
This is an Italian horror film which shocked the British commission with its plot. A girl kills her brother to get revenge on her adulterous mother. While speeding down the road, she has an accident and her lover dies. After a stay in the asylum, the mother returns to her little flat where she keeps her lover’s head frozen in her fridge. Critics found that the film was quite uncompelling and too violent for no reason.
Revenge of the Nerds (1984)
Many fans appreciated this film for the “comeback” or “revenge” that the nerds have against their bullies, the jocks. The horrifying problem with this film is the overwhelming amount of misogyny. For example, the nerds take nude photos of a group of sorority girls and then diffuse the images without their consent. Perhaps the most disturbing part is the rape by deceit. One of the characters pretends to be another person in order to have lovemaking with a female character. Later in 2019, Jeff Kanew who wrote the film, said that it was “somewhat” inexcusable and that he would “probably” dislike it if it were his daughter.
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)
One of the most successful comedies in the 1990’s was this film that Jim Carrey starred in and it helped him achieve his status as a comedy actor. Though it is possible that the film could be remade today or have a sequel, there is way too much wrong with it to honour it in this way. The most grotesque display of transphobia takes place at the end of the film with the antagonist of the movie is “revealed” as transgender. Revealed is not the best word as the character was assaulted and forcefully exposed to everyone at the end. For some unknown reason, there were people who found this funny at a time. Today, it would never make it past studio approval.
Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
An Italian horror film depicting cannibalism in the Amazon. There were very raw, horrific images set to soft music and fueled rumours that the actors actually ate humans. The film was banned in Italy, Australia and some other countries due to being extremely graphic and intercourse. The violence was both intercourse and violence agianst animals. Why on earth anyone would deem this as a good film is beyond us.
The Big Feast (1973)
This is a Franco-Italian comedy in which middle-class people lock themselves in and decide to eat without stopping until they die. Apparently, the actors were booed and shooed off the stage where they were attacked by the audience at the end of the show. When the film was first released, it was viewed as very controversial and outlandish. Some people were upset by the fact that it was a satire of consumerism and decadence.
The Mother and the Whore (1973)
This post 68 French comedy features extremely crude language. It is about a young dreamer who feels lost between his wife and his mistress. Though the film won awards at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, there were many critics who deemed it immoral, obscene, and insulting to the country of France. The story was based on real-life events, and one of the women who inspired the film committed suiicde after it was released.
Forrest Gump (1994)
In 1994, this film was revered for its take on the last half of the 20th century from the viewpoint of a Baby Boomer. Yet with time, it has lost its status as a cinematic masterpiece due to its dated and conservative ways of tackling issues like the Vietnam War and the Black Panther Party. The Boomer type of portrayals are not something most people want to see on-screen anymore. For example, the “counterculture” of the anti-war sentiment for the time was depicted negatively as well as the AIDS epidemic. Most particularly, how Jenny was treated. This means that a remake would have to entirely redo how they handle these events and concepts.
Heathers (1989)
This American black comedy film released in 1989 features the legendary Winona Ryder. She is part of a group of four girls, of whom 3 are named Heather in a clique. In the Ohio high school, their lives are suddenly overturned when a serial killer strikes. The killer stages their murders as suicides. This Christian Slater film sheds light upon some teenagers’ abilities to act sensibly. The problem with the film is that the high point is about students committing an act of domestic terrorism against their high school. In the wake of countless recent shootings in the United States, a movie such as this would continue to perpetuate the standing that gun violence has in the U.S.
Life of Brian (1979)
An English comedy by Monty Python, Life of Brian caused a scandal in the Catholic religion. Brian is closely linked to Jesus Christ as he was born on the same day, at the same time, creating accusations of blasphemy. The group claims that they do not want to make fun of God but rather of religious practices and fanaticism. The film was finally released in cinemas and was a real success despite protests from many religious people.
