The UK operator EE has announced that mobile users in the City of London can now access enhanced 4G and 5G coverage as part of a connectivity pilot project led by connectivity infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) provider Fresh wave. This news follows its parent company's announcement that it had begun a trial of novel 5G technology in Leeds.
The number of people using mobile devices in crowded regions, like city centers, can result in heavy demand on the macro site serving that area, according to EE, who explained the trial's justification. The new cells are the first 5G outdoor small cells to be erected in the City of London and are scheduled to go online in the first quarter of 2023. They are located along the storied Queen Victoria Street. Fresh wave's neutral host network, a network-sharing infrastructure arrangement facilitated by a third party, is where EE is currently live. Cornerstone, a provider of mobile infrastructure services, has a concession with the City Corporation, and Fresh wave is executing the pilot using this concession.
According to reports, this is a first for the UK: the connection IaaS provider created a custom solution for the pilot that allows the network to support all four mobile network providers on 4G and 5G right away without requiring any infrastructure changes. The project already has Virgin Media O2 on board, and Vodafone will participate in the test program during the first quarter of 2023.
The solution includes wideband antennas, cabinets, and columns that are particularly made, as well as a lot of black fiber running to each cabinet. The unique network's shareable architecture is intended to lessen equipment and infrastructure duplication, lowering deployment costs and minimizing street clutter and the related interruption during street maintenance. Additionally, it is said to be able to lessen the environmental impact while yet extending connectivity to the street level for the benefit of all.
Fewer devices are required on the street assets itself because the network uses a centralized radio access network (C-RAN) and various pieces of telecoms equipment are housed in companion cabinets. Dark fiber was installed on the network by wholesale fiber broadband provider Netomnia.
