The Juno spacecraft during its 43rd close encounter with Jupiter captured massive storms brewing near the planet's North pole. The probe, using its Juno Cam instrument, snapped vortices of hurricane-like spiral wind patterns - churning on the surface that is bigger than what we see on Earth.
NASA said that the images beamed back by the spacecraft show storms that could be over 50 kilometers in height and hundreds of kilometers across. Scientists are now looking to understand how these storms take place on the planet, which is a riot of colors when seen from land and space-based telescopes on Earth.

NASA released the images taken during the commissioning of the flying observatory that show Jupiter in all its glory. The image was released on the Space Telescope Science Institute’s Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes.
- " Figuring out how they form is key to understanding Jupiter's atmosphere, as well as the fluid dynamics and cloud chemistry that create the planet's other atmospheric features," Nasa said in a statement as it released the latest images from the biggest planet in the solar system.
- NASA has called for citizen scientists to spot and help in categorizing these storms and other atmospheric phenomena visible in JunoCam photos of Jupiter. "This process does not require specialized training or software, and can be done by anyone, anywhere, with a cellphone or laptop," the American space agency has said.

The Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) mission, being developed by the European Space Agency, will launch in April 2023 on an Ariane-5 rocket from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana. The destination will be the humongous Jupiter system that will be uncovered layer by layer in a series of 35 Jovian moon flybys.
- When the Juice mission arrives in the Jovian system in the early 2030s, it will be prime to look at the planets and the Moon in the system that has long been a source of curiosity for astronomers the world over. The spacecraft, which is equipped with 85 square meter solar wings, will make detailed observations of the giant gas planet and its three large ocean-bearing moons Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa.

The Juno spacecraft, which is currently orbiting Jupiter has beamed back data from its last close flyby of the planet revealing the colours of the planet. The largest planet in our solar system has long been at the center of curiosity for astronomers the world over and Juno is revealing its secrets layer by layer.
The spacecraft conducted its latest close fly-by on April 9, 2022, switching its JunoCam instrument that captured a series of images showing the planet coming into the view. Citizen scientist Andrea Luck created this animated sequence using raw JunoCam image data.
During the flyby, at the closest approach, Juno was more than 10 times closer to Jupiter than satellites in geosynchronous orbit are to Earth. The spacecraft was travelling at a speed about five times faster than the Apollo missions did when they left Earth for the Moon.
- Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system with a diameter spreading 1,40,000 kilometers. During the closest approach, Juno was just over 3,300 kilometers above Jupiter’s colorful cloud tops. The spacecraft was travelling at a staggering speed of 2,10,000 kilometers per hour relative to the planet.
