Where does body fat go when you lose weight?
What happens to body fat when you shed pounds - do you sweat it, urinate or breathe it? The answer is yes, yes and yes.
How on earth does this happen? "It helps us understand that our bodies are designed to store excess energy in fat cells," says endocrinologist Bartholomew Barguerra, MD, PhD.
If you are carrying extra pounds, it means that you are consuming more energy (calories energy units) than you used to.
“Extra energy is stored in the form of triglycerides in the fatty tissues around your body,” says Dr. Burgura. Small amounts of energy are stored as glycogen in your liver and muscles.
How does your body use energy? In many ways more than you think:
- When you relax. Your heart needs energy to pump, your lungs to breathe and your brain to think. (This is your basic metabolism.)
- When you are active. Whether you get up from a chair or run a marathon your muscles need energy.
- When you eat. Your digestive system needs energy to break down and store food.
What happens to body fat when you diet?
When you diet, you take in fewer calories than your body needs. Due to this deficiency, your body converts fat reserves for energy.
Your body needs to eliminate fat deposits through complex metabolic pathways.
By-products of fat metabolism leave your body:
- As water, through your skin (when you sweat) and your kidneys (when you urinate).
- As carbon dioxide, through your lungs (when you breathe).
“Meanwhile, fat breakdown releases energy for biological functions and bodily functions,” he says. "It generates heat, which keeps body temperature normal."
What happens to body fat during exercise?
Your muscles first burn through the glycogen stored for energy. “After about 30 to 60 minutes of aerobic exercise, your body mainly starts to burn fat,” says Dr. Barguerra. (If you exercise moderately, this can take up to an hour.)
Experts recommend at least 30 minutes of cardio two to three times a week.
Weight lifting and resistance training are also recommended. Increasing muscle mass will help you burn more calories and increase your basal metabolic rate.
Exercise also increases your breathing rate, so more CO2 leaves your body when you work out.

“Exercise is important for weight loss and maintaining that weight loss,” Dr. Says Burguera.
But it can take time to move the number on your scale, so be patient.
Everyone's response to exercise varies: some lose weight, others maintain it, and some may even gain a few pounds.
“Generally, however, those who successfully lose weight and stop it are physically active - up to an hour a day,” he says. "It is highly recommended to exercise at least three times a week."
Informative facts about fat metabolism
The correct answer is that fat is converted into carbon dioxide and water. You excrete carbon dioxide, which mixes with the water until it is lost to urine or sweat.
If you lose 10 pounds of fat, precisely 8.4 pounds will pass through the lungs and the remaining 1.6 pounds will be converted into water. In other words, all the weight we lose is taken away.
This surprises everyone, but in reality, everything we eat is excreted back through the lungs. Every carbohydrate you digest and almost all fats are converted into carbon dioxide and water. The same goes for alcohol.
With the exception of the small portion of urea and other solids that you excrete as urine, protein shares the same rule.
The only thing in the diet is dietary fiber (I think corn) which your digestive tract digests and converts intact. Everything else you swallow is absorbed into your bloodstream and organs, after which it goes nowhere until you evaporate it.
