The festival of Janmashtami, i.e., our adorable Lord Shri Krishna, is celebrated every year on the Ashtami date of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month. According to religious belief, Lord Krishna was born on this day.
The devotees of Lord Krishna eagerly wait for this special day. On this day, people break the fast after worshiping Bal Gopal at 12 o'clock in the night. Lord Krishna, the 8th incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was born as the eighth child of Devaki in the prison of Kansa.
When is Janmashtami?
In the year 2021, the festival of Janmashtami will be celebrated on 30 August. Ashtami Tithi will start on 29th August at 11:25 pm and end on 31st August at 1:59 pm. Rohini Nakshatra will start on 30th August at 6.39 am and end on 31st August at 09:44 am. The time of worship will be from 11.59 am to 12.44 pm on the night of August 30. The total duration of the auspicious time of worship is 45 minutes.
Do not do these 6 things on the day of Janmashtami-
1. God has made every human being equal, so do not disrespect or insult anyone as rich or poor. Treat people with humility and kindness. Discriminating against others on this day does not give the virtue of Janmashtami.
2. According to the scriptures, food made from rice or barley should not be eaten on Ekadashi and Janmashtami. Rice is also considered a form of Lord Shiva.
3. According to mythological beliefs, the person observing the Janmashtami fast should observe the fast only till the birth of Lord Krishna, i.e., till 12 o'clock in the night. Food should not be consumed before this. Those who break the fast in between do not get the fruits of the fast.
4. It is believed that on the day of Janmashtami, men and women should follow celibacy. Those who do not do so incur a sin.
5. It is believed that the cow is very dear to Lord Krishna. Worshiping and serving cows on this day gives special merit. No animal should be harassed.
6. It is believed that the house members where God is worshiped or fasting should not use vengeful things like garlic and onion on the day of Janmashtami. Sattvik diet should be consumed completely on this day.
On the day of Janmashtami, devotees of Lord Krishna keep a fast, have darshan, worship in Krishna temples. Many people celebrate Janmashtami in their own homes and worship the Lord at midnight (at moonrise) on Ashtami when the Praktyotsav of the Lord breaks the fast.
