Looking at the current pace of development in India, it is questionable will India ever become a superpower? Lets critically analyse what a superpower means, How they are formed, What are the benefits and demerits of superpower, what can we fix to make India a superpower and finally what can we expect.
What is a superpower country?
A superpower is defined as a country with economic, political and military prosperity. It is when a country's decisions affect others across the globe. Good quality of life of people living in the country is also perk of becoming a superpower.
How are superpowers formed?
When we look across history of the current superpowers across the globe we see that major revolutions were the initiators of the superpower process In Europe and China, industrial and technology advancements and innovations led to economics growth America pioneered in connolising which gave them a lot of resources and military power. So it's clear, in order to be a superpower we need to pull up something special.
What are the benefits and demerits of a superpower?
Firstly it boosts the economy and as a result the value of the rupee increases overseas, it gives natives the purchasing power, people see salary hikes and good quality of jobs, clean roads, better transport, high quality healthcare, strengthened military power across the borders and everything we expect a prosperous country to be. But what is the cost? Too much power to a single country can pose a threat to other countries and also to it own people because the government possess too much power, it can do anything it wants to remain in power, it can play with the rights of the people and snatch our freedoms so not too much but adequate power is beneficial to both people and surrounding countries.
What needs to improve and what can we fix?
1)Economy.
Mostly India is poor despite it has 7th largest economy in the world. Its economy is witnessing a growth significantly but not without challenge because the balance between rich and poor in India is too high, and more slums than cities in India.
2)Military
India only has one base operated oversea, the Farkor Base in Tajikistan. Outside of that, india's military has been mostly in conflicts with Pakistan and China. If they can build up strong international military influence, India may have more opportunities to counter a nuclear declining-power Pakistan
3)India's reliance.
India relies too much on other countries whether it may be for defense like jets or other technogies and imports. Since Rupee is undervalued it costs India a lot. A good news in that India is trying to fix this by the Aatm-nirbar campaign
4) Corruption.
It is clear that we will need good leaders, who we not make them but our country wealthy. Removing corruption would be a major part to determine India's success.
What can we expect?
Its hard to predict because we have not seen any good increase in GDP over these years but the Indian population is huge and a huge portion of them are youth. If someone comes with a new revolution in a field or if India's youth gets good quality education and if there is sustainable development the future is bright. Data suggests that if all the current issues are tackled properly India can be a superpower by 2050 but we should take that with a grain of salt.
