The third and most recent lunar exploration mission conducted by Indian Space Research is called Chandrayaan-3. It is similar to Chandrayaan-2 in that it comprises of a lander named Vikram and a rover named Pragyan, but it lacks an orbiter. Its propulsion system functions like a satellite relaying communications. The lander and rover configuration is maintained by the propulsion module up until the spacecraft is in a 100 km lunar orbit.
Another lunar mission was considered after Chandrayaan-2, which crashed after entering lunar orbit due to a last-minute error in the landing guidance software.
On July 14, 2023, at 2:35 p.m. IST, Chandrayaan-3 was successfully launched, and phase one's lunar injection into a 100 km circular polar orbit was accomplished. On August 23, 2023, the lander and rover are anticipated to touch down close to the lunar south pole.
Isro finished the crucial trans-lunar injection (TLI) early on Tuesday, and Chandrayaan-3 is now on a five-day journey to the moon. The landing module, which is topped by the 2145-kg propulsion module and contains the lander and rover Vikram and Pragyan, will now go straight ahead to reach the lunar orbit.
"Chandrayaan-3 finishes its orbit of the Earth and moves towards the Moon. The spacecraft was successfully launched into the trans-lunar orbit using perigee-firing. Moon is up next. The Lunar-Orbit Insertion is scheduled for August 5, 2023, when it will reach the Moon, according to Isro.
Isro will need to carry out a series of manoeuvres to lower Chandrayaan-3 to the target 100km circular orbit once it enters the initial lunar orbit, which is anticipated on August 5. Although Isro has yet to formally comment on the topic, initial estimates indicate that the space agency will carry out at least four Moon-bound sorties to accomplish the circular orbit.
The midnight TLI, which took place between 12 and 1 in the morning (Isro did not provide a definite time frame for the manoeuvre), was intended to run the onboard engine for 28 to 31 minutes. The duration of the TLI operation, however, has not yet been disclosed to the public.
Starting on July 15, Isro had finished five Earth-bound manoeuvres (EBMs) between the launch on July 14 and Tuesday. Four of these included raising the height at the point closest to Earth (apogee), while one, on July 16, involved raising the altitude at the point farthest from Earth (perigee).
Similar to Chandrayaan-2, these manoeuvres were performed to raise the spacecraft's height from the initial elliptical orbit that the LVM-3 placed it in on launch day. The spacecraft was launched on July 15 into an orbit measuring 41,762 km by 173 km, and by the end of the final EBM on July 25, its altitude at apogee had crossed the 1.2 lakh km barrier.
Chandrayaan-3 was travelling around the Earth in an elliptical orbit at a speed ranging from 1 km/s (apogee) to 10.3 km/s (perigee), as previously reported by TOI. The TLI was anticipated to be attempted at this time so that maximum velocity is attained and direction can be better controlled.
