In December 2019, there occurred an inexplicable and unchecked element on the surface of earth that has changed the world structure altogether. That microscopic element was a novel virus that caused a rampant disease by spreading in just a fleeting moment. Because it has affected more than 216 million people across the world out of which about 4.5 million have died and in Pakistan total reported cases are 1.15 million and about 25604 have died according to the latest data.
This virus has left the world in a deepening quandary as it has affected alot and changed the normal functioning of world by causing social disruption. All people were instructed to live in isolation at their homes to avoid viral spread and to control fatalities.
When all people were at their best to protect themselves from this pandemic there were some heroes who, unlike others, came forward to fight against the virus. They were on front-line to defend their people from this devastating element.
Although, the doctors are the main defenders who are working on front lines to grapple with this situation but there are also some other workers like nurses, medical students and other paramedics who are working side by side in this battle against the formidable viral outbreak which has infected millions of people all over the world.
The hospitals would have grind to a halt without the efforts and contributions of these health care workers. Nurses are main in this regard as they spend much more time with patients to look after them properly. For covid patients also, they are working with every fiber of their being to provide their patients a new lease on life while putting their own lives at risk.
Along with themselves, they are also compromising with their families by putting their lives in danger as well. Likewise doctors, they are also dealing with a turmoil of emotions. As this is not an easy feat for them to be in a constant proximity with covid patients with constant fear of infection and death. Also they are facing so many psychological, emotional, social and professional stress and challenges.
Despite these all above said issues and despite all other issues like unsupportive behavior of public, low standards of health care system, inadequate supply of resources and equipments like personal protective equipment and other accessories and facilities, they are still working on forefront providing patients with holistic nursing practices and care with full passion and compassion.
Every now and then, they have to work all day and all night to deal with an influx of patients at a time. Even sometimes, they work beyond the call of duty at the time of crisis just to do justice with their profession.
Same goes for all other paramedical staff, helpers, medical students and sanitary workers as well. These are the people who are working behind the curtain but are playing a vital role in war against covid.
Many of them have lost their lives in this struggle. Almost 65 casualties have been reported so far in Pakistan, out of which 4 are nurses, 1 medical student and remaining 60 are other paramedics who have lost their lives in battle against such catastrophic viral element.
In spite of all their efforts and contributions, these people are not getting as much appreciation and recognition as they deserve. We must give a big shout-out to these unsung heroes as well. Because reduction in covid cases and the control over situation has become possible by the collective efforts of doctors, nurses and all other paramedical staff and workers. They are all front line defenders and they all need to be applauded equally.
