When russia rejects ICJ order

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday that "this decision cannot be taken into account."

Peskov claimed that "the Moscow delegation is playing a much more positive role than the opposition" in negotiating with Kiev to end the fighting.

Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine on February 24. Shortly afterwards, Kiev sued the ICJ. Russia's Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered a halt to the operation, following a preliminary ruling by a majority vote in the case.

The ICJ order was given by a 13-2 vote. Judges from Russia and China voted against. ICJ judges say Russia must ensure that other forces under Moscow's control or support do not carry out military operations in Ukraine.

The ICJ said in a statement that it had found no evidence to support the Kremlin's argument for war. In other words, the court found no evidence in support of Russia's military intervention in eastern Ukraine, claiming that the country's authorities were committing genocide against Russian-speaking people.

The ICJ has an obligation to obey orders. But the court has no direct way to implement this order. In very rare cases in the past, countries have disobeyed the ICJ order.
