HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The first FIFA World Cup was held in 1930. During the presidency of FIFA president Jules Rimed, the world's governing body for football, FIFA decided to hold an international men's football tournament. The debut version, held in 1930, was challenged as a last competition of just thirteen groups welcomed by the association. The World Cup has gone through a series of expansions and format changes since then. The current final tournament, which features 32 teams, is preceded by a two-year qualifying process with over 200 teams from all over the world.
Although the sport was rarely played outside of Great Britain at the time, Scotland and England played the first official international football match in Glasgow in 1872.FIFA decided to organize their own international tournament in 1930. Because of disagreements between FIFA and the IOC regarding amateur players' status, football was omitted from the Games[14]. As a result, FIFA president Jules Rimed began planning the inaugural World Cup tournament. FIFA selected Uruguay as the host nation due to Uruguay's upcoming centennial of independence in 1930 and its status as a two-time official world champion. The national associations of selected nations were invited to send a team, but because Uruguay was chosen as the competition site, the European teams had to make a long and expensive trip across the Atlantic Ocean during the Great Depression. Rimed eventually persuaded teams from Belgium, France, Romania, Hungary, and Yugoslavia to make the trip[15]. In all, 13 nations participated—seven from South America, four from Europe, and two from North America—but no European nation had committed to sending a team until two months before the competition began. France and the United States won the first two World Cup matches simultaneously, defeating Mexico 4–1 and Belgium 3–0, respectively. The Frenchman Lucien Laurent scored the first goal in World Cup history. In the United States' 3–0 victory over Paraguay four days later, Bert Patenaude scored the first World Cup hat trick. In the final, Uruguay became the first nation to win a World Cup when it defeated Argentina 4–2 in front of 93,000 people in Montevideo.

France was the defending World Cup champion, making this the first time since the 2002 final that a team made consecutive appearances at the championships and the first time since 1998 that the champion qualified for the following final (both feats were accomplished by Brazil).
