Two years after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a worldwide public health emergency due to a coronavirus epidemic, a UN health agency official has outlined when such a warning is issued and what nations should do next.
"It cannot be overstated: Declaring a Public Health Emergency of International Concern is the greatest degree of alert that the WHO can call out to the globe (sic)," said Maria Van, the WHO's technical lead on Covid-19, in a tweet.
"What the world has failed to see is that we do this BEFORE we reach the point of being IN a pandemic." This is not a subtly worded appeal to action. It is a worldwide call to action to act promptly, completely, to wake up and act quickly, She continued.
Kerkhove stated that while the WHO has been describing the necessary actions for the past two years, some nations have decided to act while others have not.
"The World Health Organization stated what needed to be done then and now. Some countries listened to this unknown danger and reacted violently... Many people did not (sic), "She stated.
What is the spread of Covid-19 in India?
First Wave :
The first instance of the Covid-19 virus was discovered in India on January 30, 2020, in Kerala. The Omicron wave:
By the end of December 2021, the number of daily cases had dropped to 6,000. However, the discovery of a new strain of the Covid-19 virus Omicron in South Africa has put the country on the verge of a pandemic. The country was reporting 2.82 lakh cases per day as of January 19, 2022.
How Covid-19 is spreading in Indian states
Maharashtra, Kerala, and Delhi are among the worst-affected states in the country.
In Maharashtra : It has been the most affected by the epidemic, accounting for 19 percent of all cases and 29 percent of fatalities as of December 31, 2021. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region was the hardest hit, accounting for nearly half of all cases in the state.
In Kerala: During the early days of the epidemic, Kerala's Covid-19 model earned worldwide acclaim. The state had gone through five waves of the Covid-19 epidemic as of December 2021.
In Delhi: Since March 2020, there have been four waves of pandemics in Delhi. The capital recorded over 24,000 cases during the most recent wave, which occurred in April-May 2021.
