How Setting Goals When Dieting

As with most things in life, goal setting is very important. When you look at things honestly and objectively, you should notice that most of the things you do in life are done not only because you have a goal, but you have a planned and well-thought-out process to achieve that goal. So why is setting goals important when it comes to diet?

First, it is difficult to achieve a goal without a clear goal. There are times in life when it is almost impossible to tell whether you have succeeded or failed because you are not sure exactly what the desired result will be. Identifying your dietary goals before you begin eliminates this particular possibility.

Second, dietary goals give you a measure against which to decide your course of action. This is important so that you know when your efforts have failed and whether you are following the plan or ahead of it. This means that you will know when to get out and when to put a quick kick in the back.

Now that we know why we set goals for weight loss, let's talk about how we can set goals that are so important to the success of our diet. You want to set aggressive goals that are not impossible to achieve. If you set goals that you cannot achieve, you will find that failure is your dietitian until you reach the point where you give up everything. To avoid this, you must be very careful to make sure that your goals can be achieved.

When it comes to losing weight, be specific when setting goals. Instead of setting a general goal of  40 or  60 pounds, start with a specific goal, such as  10 pounds a month. You can then extend your goal for another month until you reach your overall goal of  40 or  60 pounds. It is easier to lose 10 pounds four times than to lose 40 pounds at a time. It's a mind trick, but it will work. Ten pounds sound easy and achievable. Forty kilos seem like an insurmountable obstacle. Another thing about goals is that you want to charge for yourself, but you don't have to give up everything if you only lose  9 pounds instead of 10. However, you know where you dropped the ball for the last pound and set your 10 - Pound Goal for the coming month.

You should also be very careful to work on your personal goals and not on the goals that others are pushing for you. The truth is, if it's for you, it can be more rewarding than doing it for others. If your heart does not have this, several goals can motivate you well. Finally, you need to make small (non-food) rewards for achieving your dietary goals. You may be rewarded with a new addition to your new (or brand new) wardrobe or pedicure for your new look. Make your reward something fun and irrelevant, and learn that achieving your goals can be achieved with something other than food. This is the key to a successful diet.
