Temper medic mattresses, commonly known as memory foam, are becoming more popular every day. However, with all the different options and prices of foam on the market, the consumer needs to be aware of the major differences between these products before they pay a hefty sum for a bed that lasts several years. It fits the contours of the body much better than an innerspring mattress. Everyone has different preferences due to weight and sleeping habits. The best thing to do is to go to your local bedding store and try a few different models of bedspreads.
The importance of a good night's sleep cannot be underestimated. No one can function properly if there is no sleep. Most people in the Western world are sleep-deprived, and sleep deprivation is a significant cause of accidents. Remember Exxon Valdez? That accident happened in the early hours of the morning, and industrial accidents peaked in the midnight shift. Students who are sleep-deprived learn poorly. Chronic sleep deprivation affects the appetite centers of the brain, leading to overeating and subsequent obesity. Any bedding system suited for deeper, more restful sleep improves your quality of life.
Memory foam has several advantages over a traditional mattress: It's hypoallergenic, molds to fit one's body, and provides some insulation on cold nights, so you need less bulky, dusty blankets and comfort.
Memory foam is viscoelastic, and it responds to changes in temperature like bubble gum. Good quality memory foam has a wide range of temperature response, but some cheap brands can be as hard as wood if you allow the bedroom to drop below 60 degrees. Eventually, as you change positions, the foam heats up and reacts to the shape of your body, but this may take a few minutes, during which time you will be uncomfortable and may wake up.
Another issue is the longevity of memory foam, before it eventually breaks down and loses its springiness. Better memory foams offer a longer 20-year guarantee, while cheaper brands offer 10 years. So, in short, you don't have to buy the most expensive product, but don't buy the cheapest either. You will spend many nights regretting your decision. A few hundred dollars extra really isn't much when the use of memory foam mattresses has spread over the decades.
Along with the difference in quality, there is also a difference in the manufacture of memory foam mattresses. Mattresses can have either 3 or 4 inches of memory foam on top of the denser supportive core, and more isn't always better, because if the top layer of memory foam is too thick, you can go far enough before hitting the supporting layer below. Will drown. Stomach sleepers should buy mattresses with 2 inches of foam, side sleepers and medium-sized people with 3 inches of memory foam, very large people or back sleepers should buy 4 inches.
The base of the bed may also vary. Some models consist of loose sheets of foam of various firmness levels that can be arranged to the individual taste of the sleeper, others are laminated together. In addition, man-made (petrochemical foam products) account for about 1/3 of the cost of natural latex. People who are sensitive to gas out of man-made products should consider a natural product.
