When China targets Venus, Sun, Moon in next phase of space exploration

After successfully roving on Mars, collecting samples from the Moon and constructing a Space Station, China has its eyes set on deep horizons in space. The Chinese Academy of Science is gearing up to select big-ticket missions to further study the Sun, Moon, Earth and exoplanets.

The New Horizons Program, conceived by China, has selected 13 candidates from a list of proposals submitted under four broad fields of space astronomy and astrophysics, exoplanets, heliophysics and planetary and Earth science.

Among the 13, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) committee is likely to green light at least five missions as part of the third Strategic Priority Program (SPP III) project, spacenews reported.

According to a paper published in the Chinese Journal of Space Science, “The future development of space science needs urgent top-level planning and advanced layout to clarify the overall goal and investment portfolio from 2025 to 2030.”

The selection and priority list of these mission is expected to be ready by the end of this year. Based on the budgetary allocation, technical prowess the missions will be launched during 2026-2030, a period covering China’s 15th Five-year plan.

Under the space astronomy and astrophysics, three candidates have been chosen that include The Enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission is a powerful X-ray observatory to monitor the sky, Dark Matter Particle Explorer-2 to look for possible evidence of dark matter annihilation or decay signals and Discovering the Sky at the Longest Wavelength (DSL) mission that calls for sending an array of 10 small satellites into lunar orbit.

Meanwhile, under exoplanet field, China is likely to go ahead with the Closeby Habitable Exoplanet Survey (CHES) and Earth 2.0 (ET) missions that aim to study 100 sun-like stars within 33 light-years. Chinese scientists have proposed four missions under heliophysics focused around the Sun. These include SOlar Ring (SOR) to study the Sun and inner heliosphere, Solar Polar-orbit Observatory (SPO) to study solar poles, Chinese Heliospheric Interstellar Medium Explorer (CHIME) mission to conduct first measurements of interstellar gas and dust.

When it comes to digging into our own solar system, China could go ahead with the Venus Volcano Imaging and Climate Explorer (VOICE) mission to understand the evolution of the closest planet to Earth, E-type Asteroid Sample Return (ASR) mission to collect samples from three objects cruising in space and low-Earth orbit Climate and Atmospheric Components Exploring Satellites (CACES) low-Earth orbit Climate and Atmospheric Components Exploring Satellites (CACES) to better understand the dynamics of climate.

Scientists suspect that radiation from space could have degraded small molecules such as amino acids relatively quickly on the surface. Finding amino acids on mars can be considered a potential sign of ancient Martian life because amino acids can be created by life, and are widely used by life on Earth to build proteins.

“Our results suggest that amino acids are destroyed by cosmic rays in the Martian surface rocks and regolith at much faster rates than previously thought. Current Mars rover missions drill down to about two inches. At those depths, it would take only 20 million years to destroy amino acids completely. The addition of perchlorates and water increases the rate of amino acid destruction even further,” Alexander Pavlov, scientist with Nasa’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt said in a statement.
