It was one of those moments in American history when people who were able to watch it for the first time felt like they were in a science fiction movie. But with television cameras every step of the way, the nation and the world watched three American astronauts land on the Moon on July 20, 1969.
To be sure, the project was in the works for years. You have to wonder, with the amazing work, expert engineering and amazing talent that built rocket ships and everything needed to make flight possible, if even at NASA were sitting in silent wonder and when "Buzz" Alden was the first person in history Who set foot in the other world and uttered those famous words.it is a small step for man; one giant leap for mankind.
That phrase, which itself was carefully crafted, has great wisdom in it. Sure, touching another world for the first time in human history was a tremendous achievement for America. But more than that, it signaled a new era for mankind everywhere. Suddenly, the moon was not a distant myth, full of mystery and magic. Suddenly, people everywhere felt that they too could touch the stars if they tried their best.
It was also a huge moment for the unity of all the people. Few things cause the population of the world to come together and link arms and be one person, not a separate country. Most of the time, it is a terrible global disaster that binds us all together. But this time was different. This time was so unprecedented that everyone stopped and looked, and everyone knew it wasn't a huge achievement for just the three astronauts and the scientists who put them there. This was a great achievement for mankind.
American history is replete with both terrible and good events. But it's worth sitting back for a moment and reflecting on what the first moon landing means and what it means for Americans and the American spirit. You have to wonder if any other nation would have had the capacity, creative powers, powerful mind and collective will to see such amazing achievement through success.
It is even more surprising when you remember that a few years ago, on September 12, 1962, President Kennedy challenged the American in a speech at Rice University. It takes a lot to make something historic, and the Earth trembles as a landing on the Moon was a reality and visionary leadership such as Kennedy showed that this landing was a big part of why it made history.
This amazing achievement reveals something remarkable about the American spirit. Americans are people who dream big. And it took big dreams to land a man on the moon. But we didn't dream of having just one man there, it wasn't acceptable until we got everyone home safely.
The US space program, for the most part, has had an unprecedented history of success in breaking down barriers that no one had done before. Yes, there have been many failures and accidents along the way. But Americans are not going to hold back and face all the struggles we face together. But we never forget to look up at the stars and dream of the day that we again see an American foot in another world and put a flag in the soil to forever signify that America was here!
