But more than that, it marked a new era for mankind everywhere. Suddenly, the moon was not a distant myth, it was full of mysteries and magic. Suddenly, people everywhere felt that they too could touch the stars if they too did their best.
It was also a great moment of unity for all people. There are few things that make the people of the world come together to unite weapons into one people, not different countries. Most of the time, it is a global catastrophe that holds us all together. But this time it was different. You have to ask yourself what other nation could have the ability, the creative power, the powerful minds and the will to assemble to see this kind of amazing achievement to success.
It is even more astonishing to recall that a few years earlier, on September 12, 1962, President Kennedy challenged the United States to address this issue in a Rice University speech. There is a great need to do something historic and earthquakes such as the arrival of the moon into a realistic and visionary leadership like Kennedy showed that that day was a big part of why this arrival made history.
This remarkable achievement points to something outstanding in the American spirit. The American people are very dreamy people. And putting a man on the moon took big dreams. But we did not just dream of putting a man on top, it was unacceptable unless we found everyone at home safe.
For the most part the American space program has had an amazing history of success in breaking barriers that no one has ever done before. Yes, there have been setbacks and disasters along the way. But the American people are never ending and in all the problems we face, we face them together. But let us not forget to look up at the stars and dream of a day when we also see an American setting foot on another land and planting a flag on that ground as a permanent sign of America's existence!
