If you are hosting an event on the 4th of July, there are hours and hours to complete before the big events of the day - fireworks. You will want to have lots of activities and games planned to keep everyone busy and happy.
There are a variety of games you can organize with the theme of patriotism.
Balloon pass - This game involves moving a balloon down a line of people. Use red, white and blue balloons and tell participants that they will use their hands and feet to move the balloon down the line. Create two groups of people, and arrange them in straight lines. Give the first person a balloon and tell him to put it between his legs, passing the balloon to the next person according to his legs only. That person will take the balloon and pass it on to the next person by placing it over his or her head. That third person would put a balloon between his legs and pass it on to the next person like that. The game continues until the balloon has crossed the entire line. If you have a small group, require the balloon to cross the line and return before announcing the winner.
Chalk it up - Choose a panel of judges (the oldest members of the electorate) and make them the official judges in a chalk contest. Divide your guests into two groups (or more, depending on how many people are at the party) and hand them one or two containers of chalk on the side of the road. Tell them to make a picture on the side of the road that shows something patriotic, and tell them that the flag should be affixed to the picture. Give them a deadline (depending on your team, this time limit can range from 10 to 45 minutes) and ask the judges to announce the winner after they have carefully reviewed the entire artwork. You may have prizes with a winning theme.
Parade - One of the most exciting 4 July activities ever called "July 4!" a parade with decorated bicycles, scooters and the like. Ask everyone who comes to the party to decorate their bike or scooter or something with patriotic costumes. You can have people bring you to a party already decorated and have a “best bike” contest, etc., but it is also fun to have a decorating party within the party. Have all the accessories available for decorating bicycles and motorcycles and swinging boards. You may have streamers, banners, flags, and ribbons. Kids and adults can decorate their bikes and scooters as a party activity.
Guess Game - These games are always popular almost anytime. Fill a large pot with peppermint candy (a type of red and white stripe) and garnish it with blue and red ribbon. Ask people to guess how many sweets in the jar (meaning you count as you put the sweets in the pot). The winner, or the person who approaches the number without passing, receives a candy bar.
Explosives - If you have explosives in your home, you may have a large box of various explosives. Everyone has their own preferences, and people may have clear ideas about what they want to see and hear. You can play a game to decide who will pick the next explosives that will explode next. You might ask trivia questions (why are there 13 stars in the flag?). Or you can dance. While the music is playing in the background, each person who really wants to choose the next explosives to explode should dance the most crazy dance, they can come up with. The person nominated as the judge will decide who won the dance, and that person will choose the next explosive item. Unless there are more explosives than humans, each person gets one choice only once.
