Chapter 2: Eyes on La Mu
La Mu’s life had changed.
Where once she used to sit quietly during movie nights, now everyone fought to sit next to her. Compliments came from all directions. But it was the three boys—Xiao Hou, Xiao Tao, and Zhuang Mingru—who couldn’t hide their feelings.
Xiao Hou had always been calm and mysterious. He started spending long evenings talking with La Mu in the backyard, asking about her dreams, laughing at her old stories, and opening up in a way no one had seen before. He wasn’t interested in her just because of her beauty. He had known her before. He knew the real her.
Xiao Tao, playful and bold, tried to win her over with grand gestures—late-night snacks, impromptu songs, and silly little gifts. He told her directly, “You’re the most beautiful girl in this house now.” But something in La Mu’s smile told him she wasn’t easily impressed anymore.
Zhuang Mingru struggled the most. He had fallen for Xiao Jing, but now she belonged to someone else. La Mu was like a light in his darkness. He watched her quietly, painting her in his sketchbook, writing her name in the margins of his notes. But he was shy. He couldn’t say what he felt.
The house, once peaceful, started to change. The tension between the boys grew.
One evening, Xiao Tao caught Xiao Hou and La Mu talking under the stars. He interrupted with a forced laugh and joined in, joking loudly, trying to pull her attention. Xiao Hou didn’t say anything, but the coldness in his eyes said everything.
Later that night, Zhuang Mingru saw La Mu sitting alone in the kitchen. He gave her his sketchbook. Page after page of beautiful pencil drawings—her. She looked at him in surprise.
“You never talked to me like this before,” she whispered.
“You never saw yourself the way I saw you,” he replied.
La Mu was overwhelmed. Three boys. Three hearts. And for the first time in her life—she had to choose.
