The Indian government had progressed with the new airport at Minicoy Island of Lakshadweep. Presently the airstrip in Agatti island which handles the air traffic for Lakshadweep faces restrictions in handling a variety of aircraft.
PM Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep has triggered the thought process to exploit the tourism potential of the Union Territory much like Maldives or even better.
Lakshadweep with a total area of only 32 Sq Km is the smallest UT. Lakshadweep consists of 36 islands and has valuable fisheries, and lagoons holding mineral resources which are of tremendous economic significance.
The completion of submarine optical fiber project will also be completed by this year which will push online education and open a plethora of opportunities in Lakshadweep.
Even MakeMyTrip has launched the “Beaches of India” campaign seeing an uptrend in coastal tourism. Lakshadweep is sure to top the list amid the promised discounts on 450 beach destinations in India.
EasyMy Trip .com has also introduced the campaign “ Chalo Lakshadweep” to position UT as a globally competitive destination. Their website published the offers for 2 to 4-night package trips, as well as the cruise trips at an offered price of INR 42,599 per person for twin sharing.
Another valid question is how well Lakshadweep is connected. Well, the answer is – not that good in the present scenario. As mentioned above, Agatti is the only island having an airstrip and Alliance Airlines the only operator to operate flights between Kochi(Cochin) in Kerela and Agatti. It is roughly one hours and thirty minutes flight.
The queries on tourism to Lakshadweep have surged by 50 % and Lakshadweep suddenly will not be able to handle the surge.
To conclude, due to constraints of reaching Lakshadweep the tourists willing are falling back. The Indian Govt definitely will hasten up the process to improve the infrastructure for tourism. But it is not a one-day affair.
