He had pneumonia and had been admitted to a private hospital.

Shortly after the party released a statement stating that he was diagnosed with COVID-19 and placed on ventilator support, the death was officially verified.

Born in Madurai as Vijayaraj, he rose to fame as Vijayakant, a stage name bestowed to him by M.A. Kaja, the director of his debut picture, Inikkum llamai.

After playing the lead in the movie Captain Prabakaran, which was partially based on the life of forest brigand Veerappan, he was henceforth referred to as "Captain."

When Vijayakant formed the DMDK in 2006, he daringly entered politics and shocked political heavyweights Jayalalithaa and M. Karunanidhi.
