The Girl Who Went To Sleep At 11 Years Of Age And Woke Up At 21.
Doctor say having a good sleep can turn away all our problems. We all wish that all the stress in our lives can just be ignored by sleeping, and how we wish we can sleep for hours and hours. But ever wondered what it would feel like to wake up after sleeping for years?
Well, we're not talking about some protagonist of a fairy tale who can only wake up from her sleep after being kissed by the prince, there was an actual person who slept for years and didn't remember anything about that after waking up.
In the nineteenth century, a young 11-year-old British girl named Ellen Sadler went to bed and did not wake up until she was a 21-year-old woman. When Ellen went to sleep, the medical field was just modernizing, everything was pretty new and things were relatively simple.
The world was shocked to hear about Ellen, who was the first one who have often this known as sleeping sickness.
According to History, she was born on the 15th of May 1859 in a big family of 12 children. She was the 10th kid for her family. Her family was located in a small British village located between Oxford and Buckingham shire known as Orville. Her father was a farmer who died due to an accident at her young age. Her mother was remarried to a factory worker.
In 1871, when Ellen and her siblings all went to sleep at night, the difference was that she didn't wake up the next morning. She was shouted at, shaken and pushed, but nothing worked.
After the word got around, people came to offer money for Ellen, even though they didn't know the cause of her problem. She also became a popular tourist attraction, and she got the popular name sleeping girl. People would pay an amount of money just to get a strand of her hair.
Medical specialists from all over the world began visiting Ellen's home, but they were unable to find anything.
People wondered how she was alive of her lifetime. Ellen's mother used a little teapot to serve her oatmeal, milk, wine and food. It is quite very difficult to feed someone who is sleeping. It became even more difficult when Ellen's jaws got locked. Then her mother would feed her with in a little gap in her teeth. Sadly, her mother died of a heart attack before Ellen woke up.
Ellen woke up five months after her mother died. She took a lot of time to understand the surrounding world because she was still 11 mentally.
Ellen's medical condition was termed Narcolepsy, and it was caused by a shortage of brain chemical. That brain chemical that assists humans in waking up from sleep.
She died in 1910 without any proper explanation. She has gotten, married and had six children with her husband.
Ellen married a farmer and gave birth to 6 children. And she died in 1901. One of her six children, carried forward this story.
