Mountain Pose
Mountain Pose, or Tadasana, is a foundational standing posture that forms the basis of all other yoga poses. It is often used as a resting pose between more intense postures and can be incorporated into any yoga practice.
Mountain Pose encourages you to engage your core muscles and draw your shoulders away from your ears. It also helps to improve your posture, build strength and balance in your body, and open up your chest.
To get into Mountain Pose, start by standing with your feet together and your hands at your sides. Engage your core by drawing your belly button in towards your spine. Lift your chest and draw your shoulder blades down towards your hips. Reach the crown of your head towards the ceiling and press through all four corners of your feet evenly.
Stay in this pose for five breaths before transitioning to the next pose. Enjoy the feeling of calm and centeredness that Mountain Pose can bring.
Warrior I
Warrior I is one of the most iconic yoga poses and is part of the warrior sequence. This pose strengthens the legs, opens up the hips, and increases flexibility in the spine. It’s also a great pose for releasing stress and improving focus.
To get into Warrior I, begin standing in Mountain Pose. Step your feet wide apart with the arms at your sides. Turn the left foot outward about 90 degrees and the right foot inward about 45 degrees. Bend the left knee until the thigh is parallel to the floor, keeping the knee over the ankle. As you bend, bring your arms up above your head in line with each other and interlace your fingers.
Hold this pose for five to ten breaths, focusing on grounding through your feet and stretching your arms up towards the sky. To come out of the pose, straighten the left leg, turn both feet forward, and lower the arms back down to your sides.
Warrior II
Warrior II is a powerful yoga pose that strengthens and tones your legs, abs, and back. It also increases flexibility and balance in your body. This pose is excellent for improving your core strength and stability.
To do the Warrior II pose, begin by standing with your feet wide apart. Your feet should be facing outward, so that your toes are pointing in opposite directions. Bend your right knee, keeping your left leg straight. Reach both arms out to the side, forming a straight line from your fingertips to your feet. Make sure that your hips are facing forward.
Hold this position for up to one minute, taking deep breaths. Feel the stretch in your legs and core. To release the pose, straighten your right leg, bringing your arms down by your sides.
