Black Adam star Dwayne Johnson has reacted after reports said the film would cost Warner Bros a massive loss. The actor shared figures showing the film's purported profit margins.
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson-starrer Black Adam has made $387 million at the box office.
Amid reports that DC’s latest superhero venture Black Adam has been a flop despite the millions it has made, the film’s lead star Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has come out in its defence. The actor has shared profit margin figures of the film and said that it is a ‘fact’ that the film has made a profit. While Dwayne did not address the reports doubting the film’s success directly, his tweet came soon after several such reports emerged. On Wednesday evening, Dwayne took to Twitter to share a news article about Black Adam’s profitability. Alongside, he wrote, “Waited to confirm with financiers before I shared this excellent #BlackAdam news - our film will PROFIT between $52M-$72M. Fact.” The accompanying article by Deadline was an explainer on how the film has been profitable.
Black Adam has made $387 million globally. Two days ago, a Variety report had quoted a source saying that the film would end up causing a loss of over $100 million to the production house Warner Bros. The report said that the studio spent close to $500 million on the film in production and publicity. However, Dwayne denied that and added that the film had done great business, comparing it with a Marvel rival. “At almost $400M worldwide we are building our new franchise step by step (first Captain America did $370M) for the DC future,” he further tweeted.
Black Adam is based on the titular anti-hero from DC Comics with Dwayne playing the role. The film is part of the DC Extended Universe and also stars Pierce Brosnan, Noah Centino, Aldis Hodge, Sarah Shahi, and Marwan Kenzari. Viola Davis and Henry Cavill reprise their DCEU roles as Amanda Waller and Superman in cameos. The film was released in theatres on October 21. Recent reports suggest that the new leadership of DCEU is unlikely to green light a planned sequel.
The Rock plays antihero Black Adam in the latest from the bumpy DC cinematic universe. As the impressively lazy opening voiceover tells us, 5000 years ago there existed the vibrant, thriving kingdom of Kahndaq (somewhere in the Middle East). That is until an evil king decided to enslave Kahndaq’s people using his evil magic crown. Amidst years of oppression, a hero finally arose from the people who dared to take a stand against the king. An ancient order of wizards (the same ones that gave Shazam his powers) decided to grant this champion powerful abilities to help liberate and save his people. But after a battle with the evil king, the champion disappeared and the king’s magic crown was lost forever (I literally feel like I’m reading out a children’s bedtime story at this point).
Cut to the present day and Kahndaq once again lies in ruin with its people living under the hostile rule of Intergang - an organisation of foreign mercenaries (some sort of Iraq metaphor?) A group of brave freedom fighters (Sarah Shahi and Mohammed Amer as the ineffective comic in a film in desperate need of relief) attempt to take a stand against their merc invaders by setting out to find the lost magic crown, to keep it out of the hands of the bad guys, I think?While off tomb raiding, they manage to locate said crown and in the process, reawaken the famed champion - Black Adam (The Rock who seems so content looking the part that he does little else to act, perform or emote).
