The number of children killed in last week's earthquake in Afghanistan has reached 155. According to the American news agency AP, on Monday, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said that 250 children were injured in the earthquake and about 65 children were orphaned. Most of the child deaths occurred in Paktika's Gayan district. The United Nations says it is also working to reunite children who were separated from their families by the earthquake. The United Nations has also opened child mental health clinics in Guyana district. According to Taliban officials, 1150 people were killed and hundreds injured in the earthquake that occurred between Tuesday and Wednesday last week. While the United Nations says that the death toll is at least 770, which may increase. After decades of war, hunger, poverty and economic crisis, the devastation caused by the earthquake has made Afghanistan even more difficult, a situation that has also become a test for the Taliban and how they cope with it and how the international community will deal with it. Encourage them to provide assistance. When the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, international aid also stopped. The international community had imposed more sanctions. Banks stopped money transfers and froze billions of dollars in Afghan assets abroad. Even the government of Taliban has not been recognized at the international level. The Taliban are being demanded to include all classes in the government and respect human rights. According to a spokesman of the Taliban government, at least 1,000 deaths and 1,500 injuries have been confirmed so far, but the number of deaths and injuries is expected to increase due to heavy rains and difficulties in relief operations. The earthquake especially hit the weak buildings that were located on hilly areas and could not withstand the shocks of the earthquake. Hundreds of houses have been destroyed by the tremors of the earthquake and landslides have also occurred in some places. It is feared that many people are buried under the debris of the destroyed buildings. Two years ago, international welfare organizations established a clinic here. Its aim was to deal with minor ailments and refer patients to hospitals in big cities for better medical care. There is no separate provision for accidents and emergencies. It should be remembered that international welfare organizations have left the country after the hard-line Taliban government assumed power. The health system in the country is suffering from severe shortage of workers and facilities. The Taliban's Ministry of Defense is leading relief efforts and the government has called for international aid since the earthquake. The United Nations has said it is sending medical workers and essential supplies to the affected areas, and aid agencies in neighboring Pakistan are also assisting. The Afghan people are already facing many sufferings and hardships. Poverty is rampant here and the country has been mired in conflict for decades. When the Taliban took over Afghanistan last year, many countries stopped development aid. And in such a case, the limited resources and weak facilities available here are not able to cope with this disaster and provide support in it. In these situations, international NGOs should play their full role.
