What Total Quality Management is and How to Implement It

Total Quality Management (TQM) is defined as the management of an entire organization so that it succeeds in all aspects of products and services that it delivers to its customers and are important to them (Francis, 2009). TQM is a management style that organizations adopt in order to improve competitiveness and organizational performance. As TQM is a management approach if it deals with the common values and beliefs of all the people in the organizations, an understanding of the organization's culture and the work environment is very important for the implementation of TQM.
The concept of quality has existed for many years, though its meaning has changed and evolved over time. After World War 2, quality management took a more statistical definition of quality charts being established and carefully monitoring the processes. The meaning of quality changed drastically in the late 1970s where many US industries lost market share to foreign competition and in order to survive, the companies started to make major changes in their quality programs.               Total Quality Management (TQM) can help businesses meet and exceed customer expectations. This approach requires all employees to commit to providing a high standard of work in all aspects of the company, including processes, services, products, and company culture. Knowing what TQM is and how to implement the approach can help improve any business. In this article, we discuss what total quality management is, explain the elements and benefits of it, and tell you how to implement this approach at your workplace.

Total quality management is a business approach that a management consultant named William Deming developed. The goal of TQM is to increase satisfaction among internal and external customers. TQM focuses on detecting and reducing or eliminating errors that can affect the customer, such as not having enough product to support the demand.

This method also emphasizes the need for employees to have the experience and knowledge they need to succeed. To do this, some companies typically offer regular training to keep employees up-to-date. When used successfully, TQM can help employees feel valued and appreciated, ensure customers are happy, and allow companies to make quality products.

Every employee contributes to the goals of the company. Total commitment of all employees can only take place once management empowers them and provides a work environment free of fear. Highly successful management systems encourage regular improvement and training as part of the normal workday. One such method of empowerment is the self-managed work team, where team members work independently with little supervision or guidance.
