For thousands of years, people have been aware of magnets and magnetism. The earliest records are from Asia Minor, specifically from a place called Magnesia, which is where words like magnet first appeared. Ancient people were intrigued by the magnetic rocks that were discovered in Magnesia, which is today a region of western Turkey. When people first discovered magnetic rocks, it's possible that they noticed that some of these rocks were more magnetically drawn to iron or other magnetic rocks than other portions. The poles of a magnet are in these regions. A magnet's magnetic pole is the area that attracts other magnets or magnetic materials, such as iron, with the greatest force. People were able to distinguish between the north and south poles of any magnet thanks to the finding that one particular magnet's pole faces northward while the other faces south. Then it was discovered that the south and north poles of two separate magnets act similarly to repel one another. In contrast, the south pole of other magnetic materials is drawn to the north pole of one magnet. Think about the fact that the north pole of a magnet is the pole that is oriented toward the north. The magnetic pole of Earth that is close to the geographic North Pole must be a magnetic south pole if opposite poles attract! The magnetic pole of Earth must also be a magnetic north pole since it is located close to the geographic South Pole. Life as we know it would not be possible on Earth without the magnetic field, which protects us from the solar wind, a continuous barrage of charged particles generated by the sun. The geographic pole and the magnetic pole are the two sets of poles on Earth. If you picture a sizable bar magnet inside our planet that is roughly aligned with the axis of the globe, you can visualize the Earth's magnetic field. The North and South poles of the earth are just around 10 degrees apart from each other. At each magnetic pole, the invisible magnetic field lines of Earth are nearly vertical and traverse in a closed, continuous line. Where the magnetic lines of attraction enter Earth, the magnetic poles are found. Currently located on Ellesmere Island in northern Canada, the Magnetic North Pole is also known as the North Dip Pole. A magnetic compass points north when it aligns with the magnetic field of the planet; it does not point to the geographic north pole, which, according to GIS Geography, is actually located around 310 miles (500 kilometers) distant. The magnetic poles of Earth are not fixed, unlike the geographic poles, and they move over time. According to the Antarctic travel website Antarctic Logistics, British polar explorer James Clark Ross discovered the Magnetic North Pole on the Boothis Peninsula in Canada's Nunavut territory in 1831. According to the Royal Museums Greenwich, the magnetic north pole has been moving northwestward at a rate of around 25 miles (40 kilometers) every year since its discovery. Additionally, the magnetic poles of Earth have 'flipped,' with north becoming south and south becoming north. Every 200,000 years, there are irregular magnetic reversals.
