The time from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day should be a few weeks too hard to stick to a healthy lifestyle of eating or any other food for this issue. We are constantly tempted by sweating, delicacies and just how much to eat in general. I would like to share with you a few tips that helped me in the past to stay on track from now until the end of the year. 1) Make sure you eat before going to any holiday party. You know that you will be tempted by all kinds of junk food. Make sure you do not skip meals that are good for you before you leave. Try to make sure you are not hungry when you arrive, or you will be tempted to overeat. 2) Drink water before you go and change high-calorie beverages such as alcoholic beverages, egg yolks or hot chocolate with water while you are at a holiday party. Drinks can have a lot of calories hidden in them, so be careful. Diet soda is another good option. 3) Fill your plate with “good” food first. Choose raw vegetables, but go easy on the dip. Turkish breast, as well as oily or roasted pork are some good choices. Don’t forget the beautiful salad plate with low fat toppings and fresh dessert fruit. 4) Do not cut your favorite holiday treat completely. If you do not allow yourself to indulge in a few activities, you may be breaking down and indulging in all those cookies and treats. The key is to enjoy small portions or a bite of your favorite food. If you have a soft side of chocolate chip cookies then continue to indulge, but limit them once a day or every few days. Yes the same thing applies when choosing a cheesecake or gingerbread men. Eat a few small meals a day. This old tip is especially true during the holidays. We often skip meals and indulge in a great holiday dinner with the whole family. Do not go hungry all day. Get a snack and most importantly start your day with a delicious, healthy breakfast. You will be able to enjoy your holiday more by stabilizing your blood sugar. You do not want to be frustrated if you cannot get the right pitch so invest in a good capo. 5) Use busy shopping time and burn extra calories. If you are heading to the mall, park a little, or take your time to buy windows throughout the mall before you buy. Every few extra steps you take are listed. Just don't reward yourself after that with food. For extra inspiration for more penetration, consider wearing a pedometer. See http://www.walkingofftheweight.com for more information on walking and using a pedometer. 6) Take time to relax. Holidays can be a stressful time for us if we let them. Many of us (including myself) tend to overeat or treat ourselves when we are depressed. Work overtime for yourself. Sit by the fire with a good book or magazine, go do your nails, wash or go. Do whatever it takes to calm down and help you deal with stress. Above all, enjoy the holidays and remember that they are not just about food, but more importantly about spending quality family time together. Have fun with the new holiday candles, listen to your favorite Christmas carols, or go for a drive at this year. Have fun with this special time of the year and enjoy that occasional cookie. Happy Holidays!
