I cannot stress enough how important it is for an internet marketer to know what marketing keywords to use for their products and how much their competition is willing to pay for the same keywords. It may seem like a complicated process, but it's not. In this article, we will discuss three free websites that all internet marketers can use to find this information.
Let’s talk about keywords first… When I say “keywords” I mean marketing keywords. These are the words your potential customers would use to describe your product. These are the same words that someone would type into an online search engine to find your products.
If you have a business website 'and' you don't know what marketing keywords your website is targeting, then your website is definitely at a big disadvantage. Why? Because you will lose business. And you can bet your main competition WILL know their marketing keywords and use those keywords strategically on their websites and in their ads.
You see, when search engines crawl your site, they look for text on your site that can be indexed and used to describe your site's content. If your website doesn't contain the right keywords that people use to find your product, then your website probably won't show up in search. So, your website really needs to be optimized with relevant marketing keywords that most people use to search for your product.
Another example where knowing your marketing keywords is important is when using pay-per-click (PPC) advertising. Pay-per-click advertising is usually done through search engines, where you pay each time someone clicks on your ad (link). Your ad will appear after a user goes to a search engine and starts a keyword search (which is just a regular search). The search engine will look at their submitted keywords and then cross-reference the keywords associated with the PPC ads. If they match, the PPC ads will then return with the user's search results… Go ahead and go to Google and start a search. The ads you see on the right side of the screen are PPC ads.
(Note: The order in which PPC ads return depends on several factors: the price you are willing to pay for each click, the search engine used, the ad's click-through rate (CTR), etc.)
Now let's go through a quick and free process to find good keywords for your website.
1) Go to the Google Ads Keyword Tool (https://adwords.google.com/select/main?cmd=KeywordSandbox).
In the text box, enter keywords that you think people would use to search for your product. When you're done, click the Submit button. You will then be shown specific and similar keywords. Write the ones you think would apply to your product.
2) Go to Overture Keyword Picker (http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/)
Enter each keyword you wrote down from step 1, then click the right arrow button. This will allow you to find out which keywords are the most popular in the foreplay. Note: The most popular keywords are not always the most suitable. For example, if your site sells tutorials on how to rebuild a 57 Chevy, you'll probably want to specifically target the keywords "57 Chevy" instead of the less specific keyword "Chevy." Why? Because you want to get your ad/website in front of the people most likely to buy your product.
The above 2 websites should give you a great list of keywords that you can now use to optimize your website. But if you want to advertise with PPC, you really need to know what your competition is paying for your keywords. This is also an easy task.
3) Go to Overture Bid Tool (http://uv.bidtool.overture.com/d/search/tools/bidtool/)
Enter keywords in the text box and click the Search button. This will return the prelude bids for that keyword. The highest bids are likely to receive the highest position - meaning the ads are closer to the top position on the first page of the user's search results. The goal is to get as high as your budget allows for the top position to ensure maximum exposure for your ad.
There you have it… three great websites that can help your internet marketing campaigns – and best of all, they're all free!
