Russian troops continue to bombard Irpin, a suburb of the capital Kiev. But city officials say a temporary bridge over the river has forced 2,000 people to flee the city.
The local government of Hostomel, another small town near Kiev, said the mayor, Yuri Prailipko, had been shot dead while distributing bread and medicine. The strategically important Hostomel airfield is near the city.
In the south of Ukraine, the town of Mykolaiv is under renewed Russian attack. Ukraine says artillery shells hit residential areas of the city at night. The city is located between Crimea and Odessa, the largest port city in Ukraine.
Power and water lines are cut off in the besieged port city of Mariupol. Thousands of stranded people are in dire need of water and food. Family members fleeing the city told the AFP news agency that "corpses were lying around the city."
Russian and Ukrainian officials are meeting for the third time to discuss a ceasefire. Ahead of the meeting, the Kremlin said it would suspend military operations if the demands were met. Meanwhile, a representative of Ukraine at the meeting, Mikhail Podoliak, called on Russia to stop attacks on civilians. Earlier, Ukrainian President Zelensky said his country's "murderers of the people will never be forgiven, they must be punished."
The British ambassador to Ukraine has left the country due to "grave security risks," said British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss. Shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, British Ambassador Melinda Simmons and a handful of her colleagues, still working at the embassy, fled the capital, Kiev, to the relatively safe city of Lviv, near the Polish border. But the British ambassador has now left Lavib, and the foreign minister says all offices of the British embassy in Ukraine are now closed.
Russia has said it will suspend military operations if Ukraine agrees to its demands. Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, says Ukraine must recognize Crimea as part of Russia. At the same time, he said, Ukraine's breakaway regions of Luhansk and Donetsk must be recognized as independent sovereign states.
Mr Peskov also reiterated Russia's main demand - that Ukraine not be part of the NATO or any other Kenyan alliance, and that the country's constitution be amended. He said Russia would immediately suspend military operations in Ukraine if it agreed to the demands. However, Mr Peskov said Russia would ensure "disarmament" of Ukraine.
A Kremlin spokesman reiterated Russia's demands on a day when representatives of the two countries are meeting for the third time in Belarus to call for a ceasefire. It is learned that a face-to-face meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries is being arranged in Anatolia, Turkey on Thursday.
