What The Future Of Computer Certification Exams

Certification exams may move toward adaptive testing, where the difficulty of questions adjusts based on the candidate's performance. This approach provides a more accurate assessment of the candidate's skills by dynamically tailoring the test to their level of proficiency. The format and difficulty of computer certification exams are constantly changing. When I took my first certification exam (Novell NetWare 3.1x CNA, January 1997), there were no such things as simulator questions, and my practical skills were not really tested. At that time, exams were very difficult to remember. One factor that helped compensate for this was that Novell examinations were favorable. If you have missed any question on a particular topic, you will continue to be asked questions about that topic until you solve it correctly. You cannot afford to be weak in any subject, because the exam will most likely reveal this and you will keep asking questions on that subject until you fail. With stress, your exam can end at any time after a certain number of questions. You had no idea how many questions you would get, just that you would get at least 15. Every time you press the "Next" button after question 15, you don't know whether you will get another question or whether the test will suddenly end and give you a pass or fail response. Time has changed. Cisco has led the way in introducing simulator questions into its exams, where the candidate is presented with a simulation of a router or network and asked to perform tasks that someone seeking to earn that certification would do. Is ready to do it, should be able to do it. This is a much better test of ability than the examinations of eight years ago. What will be the next "big leap" in computer certification exams? To earn the CCIE, the world's toughest technical certification, a candidate must first pass a rigorous 100-question competency exam, and then pass a practical laboratory exam. The candidate is presented with an exact set of network requirements and must build that network on a pod of Cisco routers and switches in less than eight hours. This is just personal opinion and not "insider information", but I believe the day will come when CCNA, CCNP, and other Cisco certs will require some type of practical lab to achieve certification. What better way to test competency than working on actual Cisco equipment? There would be more overhead for Cisco with such testing, as lab equipment and lab proctors would be required, but the already prized CCNA and CCNP would become more valuable in the workplace if employers knew that in order to obtain the certification, the job Candidates had to pass practical examination. This will also benefit the candidates, as it will do an even better job of protecting their investment in time and money. This can also be the next step to harass the candidates who try to crack CCNA and CCNP exams through braindumps. As I always tell my students and clients, when you're standing in front of that router or switch, there is no multiple choice... either you know it or not! And Continuous Learning and Micro-Credentials With the rapid pace of technological advancements, certification programs may shift toward a continuous learning model. Instead of a one-time examination, certifications can be awarded based on ongoing skill development and periodic assessment. Micro-credentials may also gain prominence, allowing professionals to validate specific skills or competencies without completing a full certification program.
