Okay, okay, I’m not fat in any real sense of the word, but I could add a few extra pounds. This was manifested by having a very difficult time getting my pants buttoned up or zipping, slipping a note on my belt, etc. I can guess I almost weighed 20 lbs and it all seemed to fit in my waist. Does this sound like you? You should consult your doctor before starting any weight loss program, especially if you weigh more than 20 lbs to lose weight. So don’t be afraid as I present the D.E.W. how to lose weight. There is nothing magical here and there are no weird claims of a bad weight loss, just the simple facts of life. So let's get to it. 1. Food I started with the word “D”, can you believe it? Of course you can, as any weight loss program should consider this. Here’s a simple fact that you can’t eat 5000 calories a day (or food for some of us) and expect to maintain or lose weight. A few common sense items are perfect in this area. You need to control the amount of calories you put into your body. There are plenty of food books and websites that will help you decide what is best for you, but somewhere around 2000 / day seems to be the norm. Here's the key - whatever you decide is ready to be distributed throughout the day. If you try to "eat" and eat little or nothing for breakfast and lunch and eat all the calories at meal time (followed by a light snack at night - come with me to do it to be honest). This pattern causes your body to go into a recovery mode due to starvation in the first half of the day and save as many calories as fat when you finally get a supply to finish the next morning. So find a way to distribute your calories throughout the day, in small amounts every few hours to prevent hunger and nourish your body as you need it, not all at once. So I packed my desk at work with low-calorie items (pretzels, granola, almonds, etc.) and between meals (10 am & 2pm) I ate less to keep my body fit. And I also had a snack at night, it is important when you do this you give your body time to process those calories. Before bed, not for the time being, try to make your last meal 2 - 3 hours before bedtime. 2. Exercise I go down my throat here, do not believe after the word "D" I am so brave that I raise the word "E". And this should not be news; you need to burn the many calories you are taking if you want to lose pounds. The trick is to find something you like to do and not finish it. DO NOT start a new exercise program without consulting your doctor first. There is an old story about a man who lifted a calf every morning and then one day lifted a cow (hint: the calf grew into a cow). Basically he did it with a small increase each time until he built up the strength to lift the cow. For me it was a walk, so I started circling the block I was sitting on. I add an extra block every few days or once a week. Soon I was traveling a little over 3 miles in my area. So do not try to run a marathon for the first time. Start small and build, consistency is key. 3. Water I'm not sure this will scare anyone. Our bodies are actually water. As an exercise we need to start small and build. Also, there are plenty of books and websites that give you an idea of what you can afford, but working for about one liter a day (or X.X liters for non-US people). I used water to help prevent the pain of hunger between meals and snacks. I started with a small bottle of 12 ounces and drank 2 a day (1 in the morning, one in the afternoon). Then each week I would add another 12 ounces until I reached the desired amount. I found out if you could make a pattern or a timeline (you should drink 12 ounces before noon, etc.), and then a habit developed. There were many times I wrapped up 10 ounces at 11:58 am, yes but I drank 12 ounces during the day. By reducing calories and burning more by exercising, your body will create more pollution as it converts fat into energy and protein into muscle. If it has extra water to work with it will do a better job of clearing out toxins and excess fat from your body. Yes, drinking a lot of this water will mean more travel to the bathroom, but just think of it as an extra exercise. So what we have learned, you need to control your diet and spread the calories throughout the day as your body does not need them all at once. Exercise will burn more calories than you eat, so start small and build up. Too much water = too little oil, start slowly and build up. So let's all get out of there and do what we know we should do.
