In 1912, the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) was established as a global governing body. Throughout much of the 20th century, it gave competitions the status of amateur sports. The level of professional competition remained low throughout the century, but it increased in frequency. In the 1970s, a professional track and field circuit in the United States was briefly established by the International Track Association. The IAAF responded to athletes' increasing status by establishing the IAAF Golden Events series and an outdoor World Championships in 1983 with track and field, racewalking, and a marathon event. The so-called "amateurism" of the past is over in today's world, as athletes can get paid to race. The worldwide body refreshed the name to the Global Relationship of Games Organizations in 2001, getting away from its novice origins,[15] prior to taking on its ongoing name World Sports in 2019.[16]

The principal coordinated global contests for competitors with an actual handicap (not hard of hearing) started in 1952, when the main worldwide Stir up Mandeville Games were coordinated for The Second Great War veterans.[17][18] This main remembered competitors for a wheelchair. The first Paralympic Games were held in 1960 as a result of this.
