What's your design for our Air Quality Health Index

The Health Air Quality Index is a Canadian counseling tool that can be used to counsel at-risk patients to reduce their exposure and health risks from air pollution by scaling back or changing their heavy out-of-door activities. The Air Quality Health Index (AQH I) is a tool developed to address the health effects caused by concurrent exposure to multiple different air pollutants.

The Air Quality Health Index is particularly useful for people at risk for, or sensitive to, air pollution, and provides them with suggestions for how to protect their health in situations where low, moderate, high, and very high levels of air quality can result in a risk of harm to health. AQH I is designed to provide you with that information, as well as some suggestions for how you can adapt your activity levels depending on your personal risk of health due to air pollution. The Air Quality Health Index provides live measurements of York Regions' air pollution levels, as well as recommendations for how individuals might limit their exposures and adjust their activity levels in times of high air pollution.

Air Quality Health Index (AQH I) Compiled by Environmental Protection Department (EPD) The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) provides information to the public about short-term health risks from air pollution in Hong Kong and helps the public to take preventive measures to safeguard health. Pharmacists may use the Air Quality Health Index instrument to advise their at-risk patients who have asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular diseases, or diabetes, and older adults and families with children, on how their at-risk asthma patients may be able to reduce exposure to air pollution.1,5,6 Reducing exposure may, in turn, result in reduced health risks, both in terms of illness and death. An Index is a counseling tool that shows patients how to limit exposure to air pollution.1 Pharmacists can instruct their patients to modify activities so that they decrease vigorous outdoor activities during episodes of increased air pollution and to encourage outdoor physical activity on days that have lower index scores.2 The higher the number on the Index, the higher the risk for health.2 The higher the index number, the higher the risk for health.

For pollutants other than radon, measurements are more appropriate when health symptoms or signs of inadequate ventilation are present, and particular sources or pollutants have been identified as a possible cause of an indoor air quality problem.

Although the pollutants typically found in indoor air are responsible for a number of detrimental effects, there is significant uncertainty as to which concentrations or durations of exposure are needed to cause particular health problems.

Numerous indoor air pollutants--dust mites, mold, pet dander, ambient tobacco smoke, cockroach allergens, particulate matter, and others--are asthma triggers, meaning some asthmatics may develop asthma attacks after exposure.9 Although negative health effects have been linked to certain particular pollutants, scientific understanding about certain issues related to indoor air quality continues to develop.

Unnecessary idling contributes substantially to air pollution, which in turn exacerbates environmental and health problems, including contributing to a sharp increase in asthma among children. Excessive, unnecessary car idling is a major, preventable contributor to environmental contamination and ill human health.

Growing concerns over air pollution's impact on human health have led many cities worldwide to monitor air quality in an effort to educate local populations on the risks of pollution. Each year, Health Canada estimates that air pollution in eight Canadian cities causes almost 6,000 premature deaths. A lot is now being done to ensure the accessibility of air quality information more widely among the population at a local level, to avoid the underlying health effects, by packaging it easily for everyone through the universal language of colors and drawings, and by understanding differences among regions, as well as better representations of the local air quality situation.

To compute this data, CDC is using EPA's, icon, which has modeled data on air for fine particles, CDC's National Center for Health Statistics mortality data, the US Census Bureaus population data external icon, and information from the scientific literature on the relationships between changes in air pollution and how this affects health effects. Data from the EPA National-Scale Assessment of Air Toxics were used to develop the air toxics indicators for the monitoring network. Other countries report air quality information reporting individual, crude pollutant concentrations, not combining multiple pollutants into a representative index (although a corresponding scale is frequently provided to aid interpretation of individual values).

For each pollutant, AQI values of 100 typically correspond to an ambient air concentration that is equivalent to a level that meets a national, short-term, standard for ambient air quality for protecting public health. The AQH I is a risk-based health index representing increased health risks due to cumulative effects of the three pollutants, on a scale from 1 to 10. The AQI tells you how clean or contaminated the air is, and what associated health effects may concern you.

Reports Its Air Quality Index tells you how clean the air you are breathing is, and what health effects someone may be experiencing when the air quality is at given levels. The first step was to develop the Index, which converts the air quality concentrations in the continuous stream into values, which provides the appropriate information representing regulatory or health priorities. Indeed, indexes allow the provision of air quality information at a given place and time, in order to inform the public if today's air quality is better than yesterday and if conditions are unhealthy for individuals according to their own health conditions. The air quality life index may also illustrate gains in life expectancy that can be achieved through reductions in concentrations of particulate matter pollution that comply with the recommendations of the World Health Organization, existing national air quality standards, or user-defined levels.

The Air Quality Life Index, therefore, represents an entirely new advance in measuring and communicating the health risks caused by ambient particulate matter pollution. Smog Alerts and Health Alerts (SAH As) are issued when AQH Is with a high risk are expected to persist, lasting for at least three hours or more. The goal of an air quality alert is to inform individuals when they should take precautions to avoid needless exposure to air pollution. As with other pollutants, the degree and nature of the health effects will depend on a number of factors, including the exposure levels and duration of exposure. When designing and planning our communities, we must carefully consider where homes, schools, childcare centers, senior housing, and long-term care facilities are located relative to high-traffic corridors and other areas that could have higher levels of air pollution.
