What does it mean to you to be happy? There is a lot of seeking these days for the elusive sensation of happiness, where do you get it, how do you produce it, and even what it is. But I'd like to let you in on a little secret, happiness isn't reserved for the fortunate few who are born with it. Happiness, you see, isn't something you can reach out and touch, nor is it something you can keep in the refrigerator and drink when you need it. Happiness isn't found on a beach or in a flawless physique.
Isn't it simple to believe that happiness would be on your doorstep if you have the latest automobile, the nicest clothing, and a luxurious home? It's easy to fall into the trap of believing that if you simply found the proper person, he or she would arrive with a package of happiness on his or her hip. But all this does is persuade you that pleasure may be found somewhere other than yourself. And this is where you go off the rails. Because pleasure is just a by-product of designing and living a life that works for you, a life that you like – whatever that is. Happiness is found in doing what you want, when you want, and with those you want to do it.
And yes, I can hear you all, but I can't get the job I want because I'd have to go to school, and I have to live here because I can't afford to relocate, and what do you mean, who I'd want to do it with, and thank you all for putting my point through for me. Happiness, you see, begins with the belief that you have control over your life and expands as you make decisions that offer you a sense of well-being and contentment. Happiness comes from opting to go to school if that is all that is required.
That you will order your life till you have the financial means to relocate. Also, you get to choose who you embrace, how much you smile, what music you listen to, and who you spend out with. Making the greatest decisions you can regarding who you spend your time with, how you make a living, how much you learn, and what you put into your body is what happiness is all about. Because happiness will come through when you feel good about the environment you're in, when you're among people you love and respect and they admire and respect you, and when you're working on a project that means something to you.
That isn't a secret. Make the decision today to quit seeking happiness and instead focus on three activities that you like and that add to your sense of well-being and fulfillment. Make time for them every day, if feasible, and at least once a week. It doesn't have to be for a long time; even a few minutes every day can help you achieve the pleasure you desire. Guaranteed. That's also not a secret.
