Science is a methodical process that creates and arranges knowledge in the form of universe-related explanations and predictions that can be put to the test.

Some of the earliest archaeological evidence for scientific reasoning is tens of thousands of years old, and science may be as old as the human species[3]. In the period between 3000 and 1200 BCE, Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt produced the oldest written documents in the history of science. Greek natural philosophy of classical antiquity, where formal attempts were made to provide explanations of happenings in the physical world based on natural causes, was influenced by their contributions to mathematics, astronomy, and medicine. [4]: 12 [5] Knowledge of Greek worldviews after the fall of the Western Roman Empire declined in Western Europe during the early Middle Ages (400–1000 CE), but was preserved in the Muslim world throughout the Islamic Golden Age.

Natural science, social science, and formal science are the three main subfields of contemporary science. Each of these fields includes a variety of highly specialized yet related scientific disciplines, many of which have their own nomenclature and areas of specialization. Both the natural and social sciences can be considered empirical because their knowledge is founded on empirical observations and can be validated by other researchers carrying out similar study. Natural science, social science, and formal science are the three main disciplines into which modern science is typically classified. Each of these fields includes a variety of highly specialized yet related scientific disciplines, many of which have their own nomenclature and domain-specific expertise. Both the natural and social sciences can be considered empirical because their knowledge is founded on empirical observations and can be validated by other researchers carrying out similar study.
