What's Embroidery Manufacturing

Jacob Shes started the first commercial embroidery manufacturing establishment in New York in 1848. He came from Switzerland and within a year he was running his own embroidery plant. Fifteen women made all the hand-stitched designs.

Machine embroidery did not develop until the 1800s. Joshua Hellman from Mill House worked on the design of the hand embroidery machine. Although it did not sell well, it revolutionized the embroidery industry. Methods of "shuttle embroidery" and "sewing embroidered chains" began rapidly after Hellman's invention.

Shuttle embroidery dates back to the 1860s, when Isaac Grobley from St. Gallen, Switzerland, was inspired by the work he had done on a sewing machine.

Around 1870, fourteen Swiss embroidery companies were making handloom embroidery machines in Switzerland. Today, there are four companies that make Sheffield embroidery machines.

In 1873, Alphonse Kursheedt imported twelve of the ten new embroidery handlooms from St. Gallen, making him the first American to use the machine embroidery process. The looms used multiple needles and it was an incredible improvement over the old hand sewing process. However, they were operated manually.

Shortly afterwards, Isaac Grobley of Switzerland invented the first practical Sheffield embroidery machine. This machine was based on the principles introduced by the newly invented sewing machine. Grubley's machine used a combination of a continuous thread needle and a shuttle with a thread bobbin. The shuttle itself looked like a sailing boat. In the Swiss dialect of German, "shuffle" means "small boat", so its machine came to be known as the shuffle machine.

In 1876, Kursheedt began importing a large number of Sheffield machines to the United States, thus becoming the true founder of the Sheffield embroidery industry in the United States.

Dr. Robert Rainer, founder of the Robert Rainer Inc. of Vihaken, came to the United States in the early twenties of 1903. Realizing the potential of the embroidery industry, he persuaded Vogt Landish Machineworks of Plowen, Germany, to appoint him an American agent. This led to large-scale imports of embroidery machines into Hudson County, North New Jersey. Banks provide long-term credit to buyers. Dr. Rainer made it possible for hundreds of Austrian, German and Swiss immigrants to become embroiderers in New Jersey.

The industry continued to grow until 1938, when the two German manufacturing machines suddenly shut down due to World War II in the German cities of Plowen and Urban, Switzerland. American-made Sheffield machine. Over time, the machine has improved in the United States as well as in Switzerland and Germany.

Today computers are playing an important role in the embroidery process.
