A road contractor in Abu Dhabi picked up a highway resurfacing job and brought in a paver that had worked well enough on previous contracts. The site conditions were different this time. The paver struggled to hold a consistent mat thickness and the client inspector was on it before the end of day two. The contractor sourced a replacement unit. The truck fleet size and turnaround time need to be matched to the paver laying rate. When they are not, the paver stops and starts, and every stop shows up in the finished surface.

Clients who commission road paving work have become more sophisticated about what they can measure and when. Smoothness indices, density cores, and temperature logs taken during laying give a picture of how a job was executed that goes beyond what a visual inspection produces.
Contractors who invest in equipment that can actually meet those standards tend to win the work that matters. Those who treat the equipment list as a cost to be minimised tend to find themselves defending results that fall short of what was specified.
The Abu Dhabi contractor eventually rebuilt the client relationship on a later project where the equipment was right from the start. The first job cost more in delays and remediation than the saving on the original equipment hire had been worth. That is a calculation worth doing before the tender goes in.
