The Oscars returned this year in full swing after two years, and it was full of amazing, jaw dropping moments.
I imagine the whole world has seen what went down between Will Smith and Chris Rock by now.
But what really happened?
Did Will blow up on a joke made by Chris (that he was laughing at seconds ago) about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, or was it something more?
To know the full story, let's take you back to the Oscars of 2016 in which Rock tried to make fun of Jada by saying “Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties,” he said. “I wasn’t invited! Oh, that’s not an invitation I would turn down!”
Last night Rock tried to do some razzing before presenting the award, but things took a turn, speaking directly to Jada he said that he was excited to see her in J.I Jane II.
We all know Jada has been struggling with alopecia, an autoimmune condition characterized by rapid hair loss in the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes, for which treatments are limited. The actor very candidly posted last year on Instagram about her struggles, saying “Now at this point, I can only laugh… y’all know I’ve been struggling with alopecia. Just all of a sudden, one day…it just showed up like that. Now, this is going to be a little bit more difficult for me to hide. So, I thought I’d just share it so y’all not asking any questions…Mama’s gonna have to take it down to the scalp, so nobody thinks she got brain surgery or something. Me and this alopecia are going to be friends … period!”
With her obvious struggles, she did not appreciate this comment, nor was expecting Rock to say such a thing. The camera cut away, as Will Smith walked on stage and smacked Chris Rock.
Rock was surprised to say the least about Smith hitting him live on TV, he responded by saying, “Will Smith just smacked the s*** out of me.” To which Smith replied, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f****** mouth!”
Many at the Oscars appeared stunned at the altercation between the two.
Diddy being the next presenter addressed the situation by saying, "Will and Chris, we’re going to solve this like family. Right now, we’re moving on with love. Everybody, make some noise.”
During the commercial break, Smith's publicist Meredith O. Sullivan came and sat next to him to have a discussion. Denzel Washington was seen speaking to both Smith and Rock.
Within the same hour, Will Smith won the Oscar for Best Actor for playing Richard Williams, father and tennis mentor to Venus and Serena Williams in "KING RICHARD". Through tears, he discussed how he got to protect his co-stars in the role of Richard. "I'm being called on in my life to love people, and to protect people, and to be a river to my people," he said.
Smith also said that Washington counseled him right before getting the award. Smith revealed during his best actor speech that Washington said to him, “At your highest moment, be careful, that’s when the devil comes for you.” He used his acceptance speech to apologize to the academy and fellow nominees.
The LAPD further said that Rock would not be pressing charges against Smith.
In conclusion, the fresh prince became a king and won finally won his first Oscar.
