What Month Should You Start Mowing Your Lawn?

How to Start Mowing Your Lawn

The best time to mow your lawn is during the early morning or late evening. The reason is that while most grass is actively growing during these times, the roots are still relatively loose and the grass is not yet fully developed. At these times, you can mow your lawn and still get a good amount of growth left. This is also the time of year when you can mow your lawn and still have it look reasonably well-cut. Depending on your personal preferences, you may wish to mow your lawn with a push lawn mower or a riding lawn mower. If you’re new to mowing your lawn, it’s typically best to start out with a push mower. They’re less expensive and provide more maneuverability than riding mowers, but riding mowers are often more powerful and can mow a larger area in just a few strokes. When it comes to choosing a mower, there are a few factors to consider. First, while you want to go with the most powerful engine possible, this is not a requirement. A lightweight engine is perfectly capable of ripping through the grass, providing plenty of power, while still being very light. Second, while you want your mower to be able to cut through the grass without bending or damaging any branches, twigs, or other vegetation, again, this isn’t a strict requirement. Most riding lawnmowers have a Maddison or other high-end engine that can easily cut through even the thickest, most lush grass.

When is the Right Time to Mow Your Lawn?

The answer to this question is a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand, it’s best to mow your lawn as soon as possible. While it might be tempting to mow your lawn when it’s already long and green, doing so before the soil gets too wet can cause your lawn to become weak and spongy. After all, the roots can’t grow through the soggy soil quickly enough to make them roomy enough to hold water and nutrients. And, as a result, your lawn can quickly become unhealthy and unproductive. On the other hand, you don’t want to mow your lawn too frequently. A lawn that is mowed too frequently without any purpose (other than to look nice) will end up getting too long and unwieldy. This, of course, can lead to messy and less-healthy turf. It’s best to mow your lawn every two to three weeks, rotating mowing weeks so that you don’t overdo it.

The Best Mowers for Mowing Lawns

The best mowers for mowing lawns are those with a self-propelled or push mechanism. Self-propelled mowers are the most accurate mowers and can be relied on to always cut your grass exactly where you want it cut. However, self-propelled mowers are also the most expensive. And, as with most equipment purchases, there’s a good chance you’ll outgrow your lawn. Push mechanisms, on the other hand, are usually more expensive and less accurate, but they can still be relied on to always mow your lawn in the desired direction.

A Word of Caution: Don’t Overdo It!!!

It’s easy to think that because you’re only mowing your lawn once a week, you can just mow as much as you want. But remember, your lawn is supposed to be divided into sections. So, unless you’re planning on growing vegetables there, don’t mow your lawn in straight lines. Mow your lawn so that you don’t overuse your mower. If you do, you’re likely to end up with a messy lawn that needs mowing more frequently. You’re also likely to overheat with a riding lawn mower, making it difficult to mow your lawn in the summer months when the temperatures are higher than usual outside.

Mulching Your Lawn: The overlooked mower skill

Mulching your lawn doesn’t require a lot of equipment or special skills. All you need to mulch is a garden fork and a string. With a little effort, you can create biomass that helps to mulch your lawn without adding a lot of water or nutrient-rich sediment to your soil. Start by lifting and turning your soil so that it’s gently sitting on the fork. Now, with your hands, gently twist the fork and then drop it into the soil. Once it’s in the ground, hold the handle of the fork with your other hand and gently twist it to the left about 1/4 to 1/3 of a turn. Keep doing this for about eight to 10 turns, or until the fork comes out of the ground with some give. Now, carefully remove the fork from the ground and repeat the process with the other fork. This will add organic matter to your soil and help to retain moisture.

Summing up

Mowing your lawn is a great way to keep weeds, grass, and other vegetation at bay. But not only does it get your yard looking clean and tidy, but it also keeps the soil moist and helps to prevent harmful pests and diseases. If you’re bad at mowing the lawn, it might be worth looking into hiring someone to mow your yard. Not only will it save you time and money, but it’ll also give you a better lawn to enjoy later on.
