It was named after Jupiter, the chief deity of ancient Roman religion.
Jupiter's birth
Gravity drew spinning gas and dust in to form Jupiter, a gas giant, when the rest of the solar system was forming some 4.5 billion years ago.
The "grand tack hypothesis" states that Jupiter started to develop at a distance from the Sun of about 3.5 AU (520 million km; 330 million mi). The newborn planet moved inward as it gained mass due to interactions with Saturn's orbit and the gas disc that orbits the Sun.
Jupiter's atmosphere
The greatest planetary atmosphere in the Solar System is that of Jupiter. It is mostly composed of molecular hydrogen and helium in proportions similar to those of the sun; other chemical substances, such as methane, ammonia, hydrogen sulphide, and water, are only found in trace amounts. Despite being considered to exist deep inside the atmosphere, water has a very low concentration when it is directly measured. Jupiter's atmosphere has nitrogen, sulphur, and noble gas abundances that are around three times higher than solar values.
Bands in Jupiter
The higher ammonia clouds that can be seen at Jupiter's surface are arranged in twelve zones that run parallel to the equator and are surrounded by strong jet-like zonal atmospheric fluxes (winds). The bands' colors alternate, with the bright bands being referred to as zones and the dark bands as belts. Zones represent upwellings and are colder than belts, whereas belts denote descending gas. Ammonia ice is thought to be responsible for the zones' lighter tint; it is unknown what gives the belts their darker hues. Despite the existence of a "shallow model" and a "deep model," the origins of the banded structure and jets are not fully understood.
Red spot
Many dynamic phenomena are visible in the Jovian atmosphere, such as band instabilities, vortices (cyclones and anticyclones), storms, and lightning. The enormous red, white, or brown dots that make up the vortices are visible (ovals). The Great Red Spot (GRS) and the similarly red Oval BA are the two largest spots. Most of the other major locations, including these two, are anticyclonic. White anticyclones are more common in smaller ones. It is believed that vortices are generally shallow formations, not going much deeper than a few hundred kilometers. The GRS is the largest known vortex in the Solar System and is situated in the Southern Hemisphere.
Moons of Jupiter.
As of February 23, 2023, 95 of Jupiter's moons had confirmed orbits. The Jovian system is the name given to the collection of moons around Jupiter. The four Galilean moons—Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto—were the first objects found to orbit a body other than the Earth or the Sun and are the most massive of the moons. They were independently discovered in 1610 by Galileo Galilei and Simon Marius.
Eight of Jupiter's moons are regular satellites, having prograde orbits that are almost circular and just slightly inclined to Jupiter's equatorial plane. The remaining moons of Jupiter are outlying irregular satellites with high inclinations and eccentricities, prograde and retrograde orbits that are significantly distant from Jupiter.
Rings of Jupiter.
The weak, mostly dust-filled Jovian ring system. It is made up of four main parts: the "primary ring," which is comparatively bright and extraordinarily thin; the "halo ring," which is a thick inner torus of particles; and the two "gossamer rings," which are wide, thick, and dim and are called for the moons from which they are made up.
