The idea of psychopaths has always captivated people, as violent "psychopathic" figures frequently appear in literature, television, and movies. Though those who exhibit psychopathic traits may be more violent by nature, this is by no means a defining trait. Rather, a severe lack of empathy is what defines psychopathy. Psychopaths can also act impulsively and dangerously, and they can be charming, manipulative, and exploitative. They might not feel guilty or conscience and decline to take accountability for their deeds. One of the most well-known and researched personality disorders is psychopathy. Is psychopathy caused by a biological basis, though? If so, is there a way to treat the illness?
Studies have indicated that when psychopathic individuals witness others in distress or attempt to understand the repercussions of their behavior, certain brain regions—such as the amygdala, insula, and ventromedial prefrontal cortex—that are involved in emotion processing, empathy, and decision-making, become less active. The ability of people with psychopathy to create connections between stimuli and outcomes—for example, harming someone else and the fear and distress others show as a result, or making a bad decision and getting punished—is impacted by the abnormal functioning of certain brain regions. Combined, these brain regions' decreased activity hinders how the body reacts to emotional cues and makes decisions.
Children who exhibit callous-unemotional traits—that is, a lack of empathy, guilt, and depth in their emotions—are more likely to grow up to be psychopaths. Antisocial behaviors like bullying and aggressiveness are more common in these kids. They are also less likely to identify an emotion of fear and to react to socially beneficial stimuli like smiling expressions. Teens who exhibit callous-unemotional characteristics could find it more enjoyable to be harsh than to be kind. Additionally, they are less likely to make lasting friendships because they do not find fulfillment in these connections. It is possible to look into whether a person's environment or genes influence these behaviors more through twin and adoption research.
The research on callous-unemotional features and psychopathy has numerous ramifications. We can better adapt interventions to meet individual needs as we work to understand how these qualities emerge and how people with these features see the environment. Treating callous-unemotional youngsters early on could avert adult psychopathy and all of its negative social and psychological effects.
Professor Essi Viding, leader in this field of study received the 2017 Rosalind Franklin Award and Lecture from the Royal Society. Professor Viding gave a talk titled "Why do some people become psychopaths?" on October 19, 2017, during which she covered the causes of psychopathy and possible protective measures.
While psychopaths do not always turn violent—especially when professional assistance is sought—violence is undoubtedly more likely to occur in them than in someone without the illness.

(Not all mental health professionals concur that psychopathy is an illness that falls on the spectrum.)
