As of June 25, BA.5 made up 36.6 per cent of the total coronavirus cases in the US while BA.4 accounted for 15.7 per cent, together accounting for about 52 per cent of new cases in the US. With the rise in Covid-19 cases in India, union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhutan wrote to all states asking them to integrate Covid-19 surveillance into their routine surveillance activities and follow the revised guidelines for surveillance in three areas — incoming international travelers, sentinel sites such as hospital and laboratories, and within the community, along with wastewater sample collection. The states have been asked to screen 2% of the international passengers coming to India at random and send all positive samples for genome sequencing.
