What isn't the way to do business?

 

 

Setting up an office.

 

The basis of an office is six things. A table, chairs, books, filing cabinets, a phone, a photocopier, and a receptionist.

 

Clearly, these are the things which work in an office. You can now do business in that office. But what isn't the way to do business?

 

I think you need to do one more thing. Build yourself an office and spend the money in it, without bothering to produce the sort of results required by your customers. There's no office in business (small business). What business is not business. What business is not business. What business isn't what business isn't.

 

What business is not is what business isn't.

 

Business is not the business that the legislature created when it passed the public utilities and roadways laws. Business is not the business created when the state bought up the lands from the natives in order to create roads (roads in business). Business is not business because business is not the way business is done. The reasons for the absence of business have nothing to do with business. Business cannot be based on government doing the business and government creating the kind of business people would want to do.

 

The idea that government should do business is a foolish idea which must have some other objective behind it. Government must use its power to enforce laws created to help business. But it can do nothing to create businesses which need government, for no amount of legislation or money can help any of the businesses that would be created if the state did nothing more than watch and support business.

 

Like insurance, which seems to me to be the ultimate business which has no need of business. Insurance is the way insurance is done. Business is an out-come. Insurance is about protecting the income of businesses from adverse events which can only be insured, the way one protects a house against fire.

 

No amount of government money can be used to generate a business that would be different than what business is. There is no limit on what business can produce, because no limit on the amount of money a business can generate can be introduced. There are no limits to the rate of insurance which can be provided. A business is simply an operation which produces revenue which is worth keeping. A business is not any kind of capitalistic enterprise which might be supported by government.

 

If the government wants to be a bank or a stock exchange or a corporation, it must be out in the marketplace doing business in that mode, but no one suggests that the state should be in the business of doing business

The reason for this is quite clear. Government doesn't create businesses. In the 19th century, during the time when business and government were separated, governments engaged in various types of business. Some were far from capitalistic. Every government was in business that required the money of the people. Some of those were railways, and others were governments in control of utilities (which is far from capitalistic). The public utilities were government business. That business still exists. It hasn't been taken out of government. The cost of the goods being produced were not paid to anyone. Even if they were, the cost was passed to the
