What is "WINE"?

WINE

On Instagram or social media, you might have seen that many people post a picture with a nice glass of wine.

Or may have seen wine in those fancy restaurants which are luxurious or expensive. But did you know what wine is? How its made?

For a layman to understand, "Wine" is a juice of freshly gathered grapes which is then fermented to increase the alcohol level. Wine can be made from 'Red grapes' or 'White grapes.'

In simple language, 'wine' is an alcoholic beverage made from freshly harvested grape juice.

There are mainly 4 types of wines:-

1. White wine:-

The color of white wine ranges from pale straw to dark gold.

Yes! It is produced from both white grapes and red grapes. You heard it right white wines are also made with red grapes.

During fermentation, the skin of red grapes is removed not to retain any color to the wine.

2. Red wine:-

The color of red wine ranges from purple when it is young to brick red as it ages.

It is produced from red grapes only.

The grape juice is allowed to remain with the skin of red grapes to get that iconic red color.

3. Rose wine:-

The rose has a light pink color.

It is produced by a mixture of red grapes and white grapes.

Rose wines get their mysterious pink color during fermentation when the skin of red grapes is allowed to remain with the grape juice for a short period of time.

4. Blush wine:-

Blush wines are a new style of rose wines developed in California.

They are made with the same procedure as Rose wines.

These wines get a very light pink color when the skin of red grapes is kept for a short period of time.

PROCESS OF MAKING WINES:-

Freshly harvested red grapes

1) Destalking and Crushing:-

The freshly harvested grapes are 'Destalked,' which means separated from the stem. And then put into a crusher which crushes them to squeeze out the juice.

2) Fermentation:-

The good yeast present on the skin of grapes eats sugar in the grape juice and poops out alcohol. The juice is then transferred into tanks in which the fermentation of grape juice happens. Isn't it funny...?

3) Maturation:-

After fermentation is completed, the wine is matured or aged for some time or years. This process gives wine to make its own identity in terms of flavors and taste.

4) Filteration and Fining:-

In this process, wine is filtered to remove all the yeast and sediments, making it finer to drink.

5) Bottling:-

This is the last step of winemaking. The wine is bottled in glass bottles, or nowadays, it is also bottled in cans. And the bottle is labeled with the label containing information about the producer, shipper, the region in which wine is produced, etc.

And now the wine is ready to make your lunch or dinner meal beautiful and memorable.
