A volcano erupted in Iceland on Wednesday near the capital Reykjavik, spewing red hot lava and awards of bank out of a chink in an uninhabited vale after several days of violent seismic exertion.
The eruption was around 40 kilometers from Reykjavik, near the point of the Mount Fagradalsfjall powder keg in southwestern Iceland that erupted for six months in March- September 2021, mesmerizing excursionists and observers who crowded to the scene.
On Wednesday, a strip of glowing red lava could be seen gushing from the ground, spouting 20- 30 measures into the air before spreading into a mask of smouldering black gemstone.
As it cooled, blueish bank rose up from the hilly geography on the Reykjanes promontory.
About 100 curious bystanders snappily made their way to the scene, bewitched by the sight of the washing lava and the violent roar that could be heard rising up from the ground as the lava erupted, an AFP journalist at the scene said.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office( IMO), which monitors seismic exertion, estimated the size of the chink at about 300 measures.
It said the eruption started in the Meradalir vale, lower than one kilometer from the scene of last time's eruption.
Wednesday's eruption came after a period of violent seismic exertion, with about,000 earthquakes detected since Saturday, including two with a magnitude of at least5.0.
While there was no ash premium, the IMO said it was" possible that pollution can be detected due to the gas release."
feasts from a stormy eruption- especially sulphur dioxide- can be elevated in the immediate vicinity, and may pose a peril to health and indeed be fatal.
Gas pollution can also be carried by the wind.
" threat to populated areas and critical structure is considered veritably low and there have been no dislocations to breakouts," the Icelandic foreign ministry said on Twitter.
Tourist attraction
Last time's eruption saw further than 140 million boxy measures of magma revealed into the area over a period of six months before it was officially declared over after nine months, in December 2021.
Fairly easy to pierce, the point came a major sightseer magnet, drawing further than,000 callers, according to the most recent numbers from the Icelandic Tourist Board.
Wednesday's eruption was believed to be five to 10 times bigger than last time's eruption, with about 20- 50 boxy measures of magma spewing out per second.
On Wednesday, deliverance brigades and police rushed to the scene to assess the peril and possible gas impurity, and discouraged people from visiting.
Awakening
Mount Fagradalsfjall belongs to the Krysuvik stormy system on the Reykjanes promontory in southwestern Iceland.
Known as the land of fire and ice, Iceland has 32 stormy systems presently considered active, the loftiest number in Europe.
The country has had an eruption every five times on average.
And Wednesday's eruption was the country's seventh bone
in the once 21 times.
Still, until last time, the Reykjanes peninsula hadn't endured an eruption since the 13th century, when a powder keg erupted for 30 times from 1210 to 1240.
Geophysicists have said that the 2021 eruption could gesture the morning of a new period of eruptions lasting centuries.
A vast islet near the Arctic Circle, Iceland straddles theMid-Atlantic Ridge, a crack on the ocean bottom separating the Eurasian and North American monumental plates.
The stirring of these plates is in part responsible for Iceland's violent stormy exertion.
