What is UPI Payment? Meaning, Features & How It Works Explained

Ever since UPI (Unified Payment Interface) was introduced in India, everyday transactions have changed drastically. You no longer need to carry loose change for your daily chai or e-rickshaw ride. From street vendors and grocers to chai points and auto drivers, everyone carries a UPI QR code to accept payments directly into their bank accounts.

While you may have experienced the magic of UPI payment first-hand, it’s important to know what goes on behind the scenes of this smooth operation. So, let’s find out what exactly a UPI payment is, some important features to keep in mind, and how the process works step by step.

What is a UPI Payment?

Simply put, a UPI payment is a way for bank account holders to send or receive money instantly using their smartphone, without needing to share bank account numbers, IFSC codes or long forms. All you need to do is link your bank account to UPI via your mobile number, create a UPI ID. Then you can pay or collect money using that ID or a QR code without any fuss or delays.

Key Features of UPI Transactions

1.   Instant 24×7 availability

UPI payments through banks like Airtel Payments Bank are available any time, any day and even on public holidays or weekends.

2.   Single identifier

You don’t need to ask someone for their account number or IFSC; you just need their UPI ID or their UPI QR code to make the payment.

3.   Scan and pay via QR code

The UPI QR code is a graphic you show or scan to make or receive a payment. For example, if you’re getting paid, you can display your UPI QR code, the sender scans it, and payment happens instantly.

4.   Link multiple bank accounts

You can link multiple bank accounts (if your bank is UPI-enabled) to your UPI ID and even select which account to use for a given transaction.

5.   Safe and authorized

Every transaction requires your UPI PIN, so even if someone has your phone, they can’t just transact without your PIN. Which means UPI is absolutely secure.

6.   Transaction limit

One important detail to keep in mind is the UPI transaction limit. It refers to how much money you can send via UPI in a certain period (per transaction, per day, etc). For most UPI transactions, the daily cap is up to ₹1 lakh across many banks.

How UPI Payment Actually Works

1.   Download the app & register

If you don’t already have a banking app that supports UPI, download one now. Navigate to the UPI section and register your UPI ID.

2.   Link your bank account

Select your bank, verify using your mobile number and create/set a UPI PIN (4-6 digits) via the app.

3.   Choose your transaction mode

To send money: Enter the recipient’s UPI ID (or linked phone number), amount, optional remark, and select your account. Enter your UPI PIN and done!

To pay via QR: Scan the merchant’s or friend’s UPI QR code, confirm details and enter PIN to make the payment.

To receive: You can ask someone to scan your UPI QR code, enter your linked phone number, or use “Request Money” in the app.

4.   Instant settlement

The money is credited immediately to the beneficiary’s bank account (in successful UPI transactions).

5.   Track payment history

You can see the status of the transaction in your history and even check other payments and receipts linked to your UPI ID.
