What is tide ?

As the earth rotates once in 24 hours so the place on the earth facing the moon experiences high tide and its antipodal place also experiences high tide while low tide accurs to their right angled position. So in 24 hours there are two high tides (Primary and secondary) and two low tides. Duration of each tide is 5 hours.

 

Low tides-When high tides are formed simultaneously low tides occur at right angled position of high tides as water moves away causing lowering of surface water le ebb or low tide.

 

Tidal Interval:

 

Time gap between two Primary High tides is 24 hours 52 minutes. Moon takes nearly 27 days to revolve around the earth and earth spins once in 24 hours. So, in one day the moon advances (360+ 27) 13 for which the earth requires 13 x 4 = 52 minutes more to experience another high tide. Tidal Interval between a primary and secondary high tide is 12 hours 26 minutes. Between one high tide and next low tide, the interval is 6 hours 13 minutes. So Secondary tide  

Tides are alternate rise and fall of surface water. Rise of water is known as High

 

while fall of water is known as Ebb or Low tide.

 

Origin of Tides:

 

Tides produced by (1) Rotation of the earth and (2) Gravitational pull of the sun an

 

the moon.

 

Holation of the earth Centrifugal force produced by the rotation of the earth causes tides on the opposite side of the earth facing the moon

 

Gravitational pull of the sun and the moon- According to Newton's law of gravity the sun and the moon are responsib for generating high and low tide on the earth's surface. But the moon is nearer to the earth, s is mainly due to the gravitational pull of the moon, tides occur o the earth's surface.

Lunar tides and Solar tides-Tide formed by the attraction of moon is known as Lunar tide and tide formed by the attraction of the sun is known as Solar tite. Lunar tide is stronger than solar tide.

  Why the time difference between two primary high tides of the same

 

place is about 24 hours 49 minutes?

 

Ans. The earth takes about 23 hours 56 minutes 48 seconds to complete one rotation. If the moon would have been fixed, the same place of the earth would have experienced primary high tides after every 23 hours 56 minutes 48 seconds. But as the moon is revolving in its orbit in 27%, days in the same direction due to earth's rotation, the conditions change. As the speed of earth's rotation and moon's revolution are not the same the moon covers (360° + 27%, day) = 13°10'14-63" angular distance every day. Therefore, the moon takes extra time of (13°10'14-63" x 4 minutes) = 52 minutes 41 seconds to reach the same place once again. For this, the time difference of primary high tides at a particular place of two folllowing days is about 24 hours 49 minutes 29 seconds.
