What is thyroid? Its causes? And how to maintain its level?

WHAT IS THYROID?

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the neck. T3 and T4 are hormones of the thyroid gland. The thyroid plays a vital role in the metabolism, cardiovascular, and development functions of the body. It occurs due to a deficiency of Iodine in our body. 

 

The function of the Thyroid gland: Release of hormones (i.e., T3, TSH, T4) which leads to growth and metabolism of one's body.

 

There are two types of thyroid problems:

   Hypothyroidism Hyperthyroidism  

  •   Hypothyroidism where the hormone release in the body is insufficient. Its symptoms are fatigue, slow respiratory and cardiovascular activities, weight gain despite the loss of appetite, heavy menstrual bleeding, constipation, etc.

 

 

  • Hyperthyroidism where the excess hormone is released in the body, and its symptoms are irritability, insomnia, weight loss despite a good appetite, diarrhea, etc.

 

 

  The balance or equilibrium of the thyroid hormone is crucial in females during pregnancy. 

 

Causes-

  1. Unhealthy lifestyle
  2. Inactive lifestyle
  3. Unnecessary stress

 

Treatment-

1.Take proper medication as recommended by a doctor.

 

2.Do not miss your medicines or stop taking pills without a doctor's recommendation.

 

3.After every three months, regularly check your T3, T4, and TSH level.                                                                                                                      

Food to avoid consuming- Gluten, Raw cabbage, Lettuce, Soya products, Broccoli, Cauliflower, and minimize intake of caffeine and tea. 

 

How to maintain Thyroid level-

Firstly, by consuming a proper diet: avoid junk food and processed food. And secondly, exercise is essential to maintain a healthy thyroid. The thyroid can cause laziness and depression, and therefore it is necessary to practices regularly for at least 20 minutes. A good brisk walk or a jog in your nearby park is essential to maintain weight in hypothyroidism. Try to do brisk walking for at least 45 minutes. Before you begin your exercise routine, do a short warm-up before you start.

 

    • Breathing exercises – try to inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth. This is very important for the body as it rejuvenates the body.

 

    • Aerobic exercise is another excellent way to maintain a healthy thyroid, and if possible, it should be done 4-5 days a week. Aerobic exercises including swimming, cycling, hiking, and dancing.

 

1.A simple blood test to check your thyroid's hormone levels is all that's needed to find out if you have hypothyroidism.

 

2.Your doctor will see if your thyroid gland is more extensive for hyperthyroidism than it should be or if your pulse is too fast. They'll also look for a tremor in your fingers when you hold them out straight. If they think you may have it, they'll want to do a blood test to check your thyroid hormone levels.                                    

 Points to remember-                                                            

1. You need to take a blood test empty stomach and recommend not taking thyroid medicine before the blood test.

 

2.Take medicine before one hour of your breakfast.

 

Effects of thyroid on our body- 

  1. Dull skin
  2. Hairloss
  3. Forgetfulness
  4. Brittle hair
  5. Weight loss/Gain
  6. Depression
  7. Fatigue
  8. Tiredness

 

Note- If you detected thyroid and it at its minimum, consult and ask how one could get rid of it. If you are at less power, around 12.5 mcg, there are chances to remove the thyroid permanently. But once you start consuming medicine or are detected at higher power, then it couldn't be gone forever. Consult your gynec as the earliest. And don't panic or stress yourself even if you get a thyroid. Just accept it and take proper treatment and try your best to maintain the level.
