The production of aquatic populations under regulated circumstances is known as aquaculture. Fish, crustaceans, aquatic plants, and mollusks are all farmed in this process.Aquaculture is defined as follows by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The production of aquatic species, such as fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and aquatic plants, is known as aquaculture. In essence, it entails operations that boost output, like routine stocking, breeding, raising, and harvesting of aquatic plants and animals. One area of agriculture with the quickest growth is aquaculture. Depending on the species being cultivated and the method being utilised, the culture requires the addition of nutrients and water.

 

 In aquaculture, water is divided into three categories: fresh, salt, and brackish. Saltwater with a salinity of 35 ppt in the sea and ocean, and freshwater with a salinity of 0–0.5 ppt in the country's interior regions Estuaries, river deltas, lagoons, and backwaters are typically where brackish water—which has a salinity between fresh and salt water—occurs.Aquaculture has grown more rapidly over time as a result of the decline in commercial fishing of wild fish and shellfish populations. Geographical location, water body conditions, target species, resource availability, seed availability, meteorological conditions, etc. are the key factors that influence the choice of a particular aquaculture system. Fish culture, though, is more pertinent. It is often done with a single species as a monoculture or with various combinations of suitable species as a polyculture.

Typically, zero-salinity water is used for freshwater farming. Catla, Rohu, Mrigal, Silver carp, Common carp, and Freshwater Prawn are among the principal freshwater species that are cultivated. A blend of freshwater and saltwater is called brackish water. It include estuaries, creeks, backwaters, and mangrove waterways. Fish, shrimp, crabs, and mollusks are some of the main species cultivated. In mariculture, sea cages are used to raise species of fish and shellfish that are valuable commercially in the open ocean.

 

 Aquaculture's main goal is to create cheap, protein-rich food for people. There are extensive, semi-intensive, and intensive fish farming systems, according to their level of intensity. The culture can be classified as Pond, Cage, Pen, or Raceway culture depending on the type of enclosure it is utilised in. Additionally, there are a few integrated cultural systems like agriculture and animal husbandry combined with fish aquaculture. (Examples: Poultry-cum-fish farming, Duck-cum-fish culture). Through the control of their life cycles, modern aquaculture technology enables the commercial and viable production of organisms. Aquaculture contributes to the lower levels of the food chain by growing algae and other species that are used as animal feed.

 

Aquaculture offers a number of benefits. It consists of
